“Harvard is woke; The War Department is not.”

This is an enormous own-goal by Hegseth. Cancelling all grad-level professional military education at Harvard will hurt not just these officers but ultimately US military effectiveness, too, while leaving the military even more isolated from society
Pentagon says it's cutting ties with 'woke' Harvard, discontinuing military training, fellowships
The Pentagon says it will cut ties with Harvard University, ending military training, fellowships and certificate programs.

There’s a “superstar” layer at every R1 institution I’ve been at that isn’t composed of academics in any sense I recognize. They’re there so the institution can claim them, but they use the university as a launchpad to contracts and speaking engagements. They’re not teaching the intro classes.

NGL, this makes me sad (just think of all those great covers)

DOGE cut US humanitarian aid spending from $14 billion (2024) to only $3.7 billion (2025). Global aid is now 40% below 2022 levels

"The net effect has been a historic implosion of global humanitarian response."

The consequences of these cuts have been deadly and devastating and are now coming into focus. Will humanitarian funding ever rebound?

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

INBOX: Washington Post Ukraine Correspondent Lizzie Johnson announces that she has been laid off in the middle of a below-freezing war zone without power, heat, or running water.

Where are the good billionaires?
This is tremendous. Take the time to watch it.
Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

Seriously, it shouldn't be hard to identify the other reporters in the Oval Office and to ask them why they remain silent when the president of the United States verbally attacks one of their colleagues.
This @bostonreview.bsky.social piece by @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social is an absolute must-read, as are many of the responses to it.

Spread this one far and wide.

A reminder that the Kennedy Center is the literal and legal and congressional designated presidential memorial to JFK. This would be like Trump tearing down the Lincoln Memorial to build something “better.”
He’s going to tear it down
Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning.

Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.
It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

That’s a great stack of books

Your moment of Vermont zen, full moon edition
I was there. They were indiscriminately firing multiple canisters into a huge peaceful crowd. Fucking cowards
I saw it too:
