Extremely funny to call the pope “holier-than-thou”

it's Christmas Eve but it's also the 16 year anniversary of the time an art historian for the Hungarian National Gallery spotted a long lost painting while watching Stuart Little with his 3-year-old daughter, recognizing it in the movie set

I also had questions about the bangs

Kristi Noem’s DHS posted an AI video showing Santa as an ICE agent rounding up immigrants.

To accompany this latest absurdity, let me introduce you to an article on the ontological security of US naval ship museums by me and Brent Steele, which can perhaps shed light a bit on why this pathetic obsession with big things that shoot guns. Open access here: academic.oup.com/jogss/articl...

So YES this has been a huge success.

Cannot think of a better metaphor for America than this crane dangling two portapotties from hundreds of feet up. One door has already opened and I am waiting for all that shit to come crashing on my house.
AI is not going to go away
A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

What about this is controversial? Beginning an inquiry by using AI to survey material is a very normal and appropriate use.

Oh I don't think we can blame the use of AI on rush to productivity. There's been publish or perish paradigm for decades. This just makes me think a lot of academics don't actually enjoy their jobs and are just phoning it in. Which makes me so mad considering how many junior people can't get jobs.

yes same and same!!!

I wake up in the morning, scream about this until the end of the day, then start again the following day. This is my life now. We have to make this stop.
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

This is indistinguishable from a post by The Onion.

it's really hard to watch my only solace is that it's worse for them to wear it than for me to see it so there's that

Spotted a 60-something man on the beach reading Olivia Nuzzi’s “American Canto.” His wife is nearby. She has Mar-a-Lago face and is wearing a trucker hat that says “Sun. Yoga. Champagne.” She’s been watching a live cam feed of her front door on a comically large tablet for the last 20 minutes.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.

It's going to feel so good "renaming" the Kennedy Center and demolishing the "ballroom" when he's gone.
on the bright side three years from now will be boom times for businesses that specialize in removing garish brass letters from buildings
I don’t know how it works at the New York Times, but my editors at The Guardian would never let me publish this if they knew that I was one of the elites who spent time with Epstein. And if I published it without telling them, I would be out of a job.
