Wrote about the State Department's made up censorial rationale for banning visas for some folks based on their speech. It's nonsense.

More sustainability challenges for drillers that have nothing to do with climate change…

Reposted by Gavin A. Schmidt

Shale drillers have turned the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico into a pressure cooker that is literally bursting at the seams.
America’s Biggest Oil Field Is Turning Into a Pressure Cooker
Drillers’ injection of wastewater is creating mayhem across the Permian Basin, raising concern about the future of fossil-fuel production there.

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

This is interesting - and I think there is a lot of value here - but there is a demarcation problem (as there always is in distinguishing science from pseudo-science). Critiques always run the gamut from real to crazy, but working out exactly where it crosses a line is hard (impossible?).
Everyone involved in the publication and promotion of this book should be embarrassed. It's not a "harsh truth" that COVID mitigation was a mistake, it's ghoulish and false.

Sure it's possible to do something in a few weeks. It's just that it will be crap. It would take longer than that to just check that the references haven't been hallucinated.
I look forward to the legally required, transparent peer review process required by the US Global Change Research Act and the Information Quality Act. I always thought they would try to do a NCA with Judith Curry, five old men and a LLM.
It’s the gold standard of US climate research. Contrarians could write the next one.

Ha. No. I think it’s interesting to see whether something simple continues to work or not. Only the training data (which now includes 2023) is different.

Bill did a reasonable job (since he is primarily a showman too) with the creationist guy but I’m not sure what the point was. No one’s opinion was changed and there was a large potential downside if it hadn’t gone well.
NOAA has started terminating grants to UCAR under the UCAR/NOAA Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program (CAMP).

Exactly.

Scientists are (were?) easy enough to flatter into taking part in these events (oh you guys are so smart, you’ll have no problem rebutting the nonsense etc), but when you test a scientist’s showmanship against a professional showman? It’s rarely going to go well.

Expectations are lopsided, Gish gallops hard to combat, & Brandolini’s law is very relevant. And the main question is almost always a terrible framing.
There was a vogue for climate debates along these same lines a decade or so back. And for evolution/creationism before that. With very few exceptions, these formats are stacked against the mainstream position. I recommend not doing them (and yes, I speak from experience).
Because it’s not just Bari Weiss’ CBS asking this question—in the last few months, I’ve been approached by half a dozen different shows looking to ‘debate’ the same topic.

I even got a request from NPR-distributed “Open to Debate” to see if I’d weigh in on “Has Feminism Hurt Women?”

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...
