Chasing balanced agricultural trade in a high-income, high-consumption economy is chasing a white rabbit. My latest (ungated) for @barrons.com.

Now enjoy your hot cocoa (grown in Côte d'Ivoire) and ginger snaps (India, China, Nigeria).
Fixing the U.S. Agricultural Trade Deficit is a Fool’s Errand
A forecast $50 billion deficit would be the largest in modern history, Cullen S. Hendrix writes in a guest commentary.

Calm down: they're probably just talking about Trump.
This is profoundly un-American.

No—that's not right.

It's *anti*-American.

It's hatred of the United States and its founding documents and all its people and all its traditions.

The person who wrote and approved this is a weirdo who detests everything that America stands for.

The future of globalisation
At the CEPR annual Symposium in Paris we sat down with Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a distinguished fellow of CEPR, and a global authority on geopolitics and trade to discuss the profound changes in the multilateral order in 2025, how countries will adjust to this new normal – and whether the changes we have seen will ever be unwound.

Ditto.
Bob and I were among the hundreds of researchers that were supposed to conduct the 6th U.S. National Climate Assessment. Now it looks like they're gonna produce it with a few people and Grok? Communities need rigorous and accurate information about climate change. This will put communities at risk.

Strong choice - sending an emissary from one of the poorest, most polluted states in the union to tout the virtues of the American way.

"Hi, I represent Cancer Alley. You guys want in?"

Real 3D chess right here.

HASSETT: If the Supreme Court doesn't find with us, refunds would go to whoever cut the check for the tariff

BRENNAN: Doesn't the administration claim it was the country that paid that?

HASSETT: Uhh --

I'm a quant social scientist but I completely agree. The GOP at least since Bush II ("the reality-making business") has been successful at pulling opinion to their positions, not chasing ephemera. That may not last (and disagree w/aim) but it's better than the poll-driven contortion act we get.

From someone just as qualified to comment: please get your kids vaccinated.

I feel sorry for all the Andrews who resemble this guy but are not this guy. You might need to see a dentist soon.

Absolutely.
Congrats again to everyone for pretending the far right authoritarian party’s assault on higher education was really about fighting antisemitism
Weird how this keeps happening.

You don't think it can be used for things liked merging datasets and proofreading? I get wholesale text generation or model/theory specification, but seems like there are some useful applications.
Question: When the head of the DOJ’s Civil Rights division tweets out a false statement about an individual that results in them being barraged with death threats based on their religion and ethnicity, which governmental agency would look into whether that student’s Civil Rights had been infringed?

If you do wind up hearing about this stuff, it's definitely not through official channels - and also may just be one sour grapes perspective.

She's a beaut, Clark. Fantastic photo.

The lyrics are embarrassing in the best way possible, but make no mistake: the VH brothers are both prodigious talents and Michael Anthony was very underrated.
the thing about van halen is that the music is so stupid it's actually genius

I'm glad they had the decency to acknowledge it. I remember presenting a long short list to the department and saying "we could have given you four other equally impressive lists. This just came down to taste." 3 positions, 900+ applicants.

The Aussie is a true profile in courage.

Seems like significant progress to me. Faculty hires are beyond sticky and not a ton of hiring since 2007/08.

Under RFK Jr., U.S. plans to stop recommending most vaccines, defer to doctors
The plan, which is not finalized, suggests children get fewer shots and shifts to a model telling parents to consult doctors to make their own vaccine choices.

Tapper: This is one of the documents the DOJ released. It’s 100 pages. It’s all black. That’s the transparency we’re getting.

good fucking god

Few people know this territory as well as @veron.bsky.social - and good for Europe.
A few quick thoughts about this morning's decision. Don't believe the spin from various Russians & others: it's a big deal. The EU has now unambiguously demonstrated that it is able and willing to provide the external financial support Ukraine needs, for as long and as much as it takes. (1/N)
