25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

This is my favorite statue because there’s no statue; no powerful individual to elevate. The artist, Do Ho Suh, calls his non-statue “Public Figures.” Why? Look at the base of the pedestal (see close-ups in the 🧵).

One of my favorite stories about Mamdani’s father, who was jailed during the civil rights march in Montgomery in 1965:

Weeks after he got out, the FBI paid him a visit. They asked why he was at the march, and who had influenced him. An hour into the interrogation, they asked, “Do you like Marx?”
