It seems the first of the new 'nine river walks' the Government announced in place of a real access policy... won't actually create any new access?

They're just upgrading the existing path and adding some signs and benches. A really rubbish level of ambition.

Here's me for @newstatesman1913.bsky.social arguing that the only way to forestall a Reform government is to make a more decisive break with neoliberalism than Starmer is ever going to, or most of the parliamentary 'soft left' still seem capable of imagining.

Regulation has failed.
This government imposed a Bonus Ban, but water bosses and shareholders will always find ways to reward themselves for their failures, with eye-watering payouts.

It's high time for the whole English water sector to come into public ownership.

one of the critical things here is that 90 percent of journalism has been destroyed, and the remaining 10 percent is what was once the top 10 percent, highly status-driven, highly opinion-driven, and intensely New York/DC centered. there's no ladder to come up as a journeyman left.
i say this with nothing but love for all of you to whom this applies, but the moral rot in elite journalism is because journalism is a trade and it should be done by tradespeople and instead it's been professionalized in a way that makes it cozy to capital instead

Do Quakers do Christmas? Traditionally, Quakers don't celebrate special days, but today the picture is more complex.

Rhiannon Grant shares four questions she asks herself when thinking about whether and how to participate in Christmas activities.

Happy Winter Solstice, where we celebrate the returning of the light, on the shortest day and longest night.
On the solstice, when the land feels closest to its oldest stories, we’re reminded how much of England’s past remains out of reach.

A representation of entrenched inequality not just between generations but families. The politics which follows is a vast ideological effort to justify that inequality as natural & necessary, to ridicule critics & distract opposition while ignoring the fraying of society that is its consequence.

It's a beautiful mini-doc profiling the concept of Wild Service on a neglected river in east London, now being restored by a community of guerrilla guardians...

Quakers in Britain are continuing to work to ensure that all Quaker communities are inclusive of gender diversity, following a decision in 2021. A new document provides both theological background for this, rooted in the commandment to love one another, and practical guidance. 1/4
We are deeply concerned for the health of Qesser Zuhrah, who has been on hunger strike for 46 days.

We join those calling on the government to act now, and address the serious concerns raised by lawyers acting for the prisoners.

Radical right parties in Europe have not moderated. Their positions and rhetoric have entered the mainstream. They have become normalized and legitimized. Unless we understand this, we have little chance of countering their success.
In many parts of Europe populist-right parties have moderated as they have grown, shedding unpopular policies and personnel. If anything, the AfD in Germany is growing more radical econ.st/3KSptMm

Honestly, I’m furious. Sandy Hook should have been the end of this. Yet on its anniversary more children are dead, injured, and traumatized. It is a horror that is entirely preventable. And we should prevent it. It is not impossible. No matter what the received wisdom has become.

I strongly recommend the book. @bostonreview.bsky.social also did a symposium on it a few years ago which is well worth a read.
