This land belongs to all of us, yet too often a few control access at the expense of the many. Securing a true Right to Roam is the reform we need to ensure everyone can explore, enjoy, and connect with our countryside.

The Government has just announced the first of their ‘nine new river walks’: a section of the River Mersey. Whilst we commend any new access, this is giving us the Boxing Day scraps, and is not the ambitious access legislation we have been promised.

As our big, flagship access policy this is pretty rubbish tbh: a very short walk, no new access or footpaths. Nice but...

...yeah, hardly a right to roam replacement is it? Small beer is being kind

The proposed first new National River Walk, the government’s Boxing Day announcement, is a ‘damp squib’, we argue. The government claims that it will provide ‘21 kilometres of new paths’ along the Mer...

The Government has announced the first of their ‘nine new river walks’: a section of the River Mersey near Stockport. Yet what’s being presented as a national breakthrough is, in reality, a set of long-overdue local council upgrades to existing riverside paths.

A skim through the details... 🧵

It seems the first of the new 'nine river walks' the Government announced in place of a real access policy... won't actually create any new access?

They're just upgrading the existing path and adding some signs and benches. A really rubbish level of ambition.

Happy Winter Solstice, where we celebrate the returning of the light, on the shortest day and longest night.
On the solstice, when the land feels closest to its oldest stories, we’re reminded how much of England’s past remains out of reach.

The Roding is London’s largest forgotten river. It endures every modern indignity: scythed by motorways and concrete bridges; choked with sewage and rubbish; canalised, fly-tipped, thickened with the polluted slime of London clay. It is a forbidding place to call home. youtu.be/7sjOGOguq5A
A London barrister declared a river sacred. This is what happened next.

Scotland has enjoyed a Right to Roam for decades, supported by a detailed code of access that helps people enjoy nature responsibly. We hope to learn from this and create a new system of fair and responsible access in England.

This past weekend saw the last of our river trespasses organised by our amazing Local Groups. The past month has seen 10 river trespasses take place across England - demanding greater access to our waterways, and pointing out that the Government’s pledge of a mere 9 river walks is inadequate.

The Enclosure Acts took away centuries of shared access to land, putting fences between people and nature. Securing the Right to Roam is about reclaiming the freedom to explore, enjoy, and reconnect with our countryside once again.

As of the 1st of December The Government has announced an Access Green Paper, which will consult on how to ‘strengthen the public’s legal right to access’. This is welcome - but further delay isn't: Labour MPs & access NGOs are united on the need for access legislation now.

Kernow showed up in force for river access last weekend. Twenty people gathered near Bodmin to trespass a stretch of the River Camel, while another seven walked the full 20 miles of the Camel Trail to highlight the inadequacy of the government’s proposed nine river walks.

You’ve seen the signs: ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’. They lie. In the UK ‘trespass’ is a civil offence, not a criminal one. You cannot face prosecution simply for being on someone’s land, off a designated Right of Way, open access land, or land where bylaws permit access, without permission.

These wild places are our shared heritage, linking us to our past and the natural world. When we walk, swim, climb, camp, or paddle responsibly, we not only connect with them we also learn how to care for them.

Yesterday (November 16th), a group of walkers, wild swimmers, canoeists and river guardians went to explore a stretch of the River Avon. Flowing from source (The Vale of Pewsey) to sea (Christchurch), the Avon is a rare and important chalk stream habitat.
