Our North West Local Group set out on a trespass walk along the River Bollin, rambling through town, woodland, water, and fields. Along the way, they visited a woodland microenclosure watched over by CCTV cameras, and later took to the river for a paddle.

Founded in 1907 to defend landowners’ interests, the CLA has fought against every major push to open up the countryside. From blocking early footpath reforms to opposing today’s right to roam movement, the CLA has stood on the wrong side of public access for over a century.

Access to green and blue spaces shouldn’t be a privilege reserved for the few. It should be something everyone can enjoy, explore, and connect with.

Discussions along the way focused on how landowners and the public could collaborate by sharing information about sensitive habitats to promote responsible enjoyment. The group ended the walk at a traditional local swimming spot: technically trespass, precarious, but generally long tolerated.

The walk supported the national Right to Roam campaign and questioned whether the government’s “Nine River Walks” promise goes far enough, where we’re calling for a Scottish-style right of responsible access, including to rivers.

The event was not aimed at particular local landowners or angling groups, who do valuable conservation work, but sought to highlight how little of the Wensum is open to the public. Of its 75 km, only around 7% can be walked as of right, and just 16% in total.

Seventeen walkers joined Norfolk Right to Roam for a two-mile autumn walk beside the River Wensum. The route followed an ancient public path through oak woodland, past former gravel pits now rich in wildlife, before looping back through meadows and woods beside the river.

Our Land, a new documentary, interrogates the connections between land, power and a sense of belonging following the Right to Roam movement in England and Wales. It captures the tension between public campaigners fighting for greater access to nature and landowners.

The group conducted a litter pick before meeting up with the ‘friends of the River Dart’ flotilla.
November 3, 2025 at 5:01 PM
On the River Dart alone, there are 108 different landowners, meaning negotiating permissive access would be a logistical nightmare, whereas a simple law change to a right of responsible access would unlock all of our rivers.
November 3, 2025 at 5:01 PM
The River Dart trespass was undertaken by our South Devon group, where they met at Galmpton before trespassing in the Waddeton Court and Sandridge Barton Estates, the latter of which is owned by a company registered in the Cayman Islands.

Time in nature isn’t a luxury, it’s essential for our wellbeing. A Right to Roam ensures everyone can have access to the landscapes that nourish our minds and bodies.

Why? The plan for 9 new river walks is unworkable and inadequate. Around 96% of rivers in England & Wales lack a clear right of navigation. Instead, the govt should grant a default right of responsible access to all rivers and the wider countryside.

When? Taking place all across November with more dates to be announced!

Where? Our local groups are taking action all across the country, from Cornwall to Yorkshire.

🌀 Every river for everyone. 9 river trespasses are taking place over November to address the inadequate promise of the 9 river walks proposed by the Government last year.

Sometimes it’s really that simple. The Right to Roam is about fairness, freedom, and giving everyone the chance to connect with nature.

We don't just want 9 river walks, we want access to all rivers. 96% of rivers in England and Wales have no rights of access. Landowners have blocked public access to rivers for centuries. Labour's promise is just 9 new river walks. We say that's not enough.

This campaign isn’t just about people getting outside, it’s about rekindling our connection to nature to ensure our landscapes and wildlife can thrive too.

As land ownership becomes increasingly concentrated, real freedom to access and enjoy nature is at risk. That’s why it’s more important than ever to keep pushing to protect and extend our right to roam.

It’s easy to see the benefits that better access to nature brings by looking at examples in Scotland and across Scandinavia. Our campaign aims to bring these same opportunities to people in England, giving everyone the chance to explore, connect with, and care for our countryside.

Access to nature from a young age helps build a lifelong love and respect for the land. A Right to Roam can help give that opportunity to everybody.
