Founded in 1907 to defend landowners’ interests, the CLA has fought against every major push to open up the countryside. From blocking early footpath reforms to opposing today’s right to roam movement, the CLA has stood on the wrong side of public access for over a century.

Access to green and blue spaces shouldn’t be a privilege reserved for the few. It should be something everyone can enjoy, explore, and connect with.

Seventeen walkers joined Norfolk Right to Roam for a two-mile autumn walk beside the River Wensum. The route followed an ancient public path through oak woodland, past former gravel pits now rich in wildlife, before looping back through meadows and woods beside the river.

Our Land, a new documentary, interrogates the connections between land, power and a sense of belonging following the Right to Roam movement in England and Wales. It captures the tension between public campaigners fighting for greater access to nature and landowners.

The River Dart trespass was undertaken by our South Devon group, where they met at Galmpton before trespassing in the Waddeton Court and Sandridge Barton Estates, the latter of which is owned by a company registered in the Cayman Islands.

There are around 1,500 rivers in Britain, so the government’s manifesto pledge to create a mere 9 river walks is simply pathetic.

Give the public a right of responsible access to all rivers & the wider countryside.

3/ As we found on our trespass along the River Dart today, plenty of landowners have already created private walks along the river. The physical infrastructure is already there. But outdated trespass laws mean the public has no right of access.

Let's create a right of responsible access in England

So the Govt's pledge of a mere 9 river walks is paltry.

Moreover, it's unworkable. As @lewis-winks.bsky.social has found, the River Dart alone has 108 landowners - impossible to negotiate permissive access with them all

Great trespass along the River Dart today to kick off @righttoroam.bsky.social's 9 river trespasses in November - protesting the inadequacy & unworkability of the Govt's 9 river walks pledge

We trespassed in an estate owned in the Cayman Islands & later met up with kayakers from Friends of the Dart

🌀 Every river for everyone. 9 river trespasses are taking place over November to address the inadequate promise of the 9 river walks proposed by the Government last year.

We don't just want 9 river walks, we want access to all rivers. 96% of rivers in England and Wales have no rights of access. Landowners have blocked public access to rivers for centuries. Labour's promise is just 9 new river walks. We say that's not enough.

As land ownership becomes increasingly concentrated, real freedom to access and enjoy nature is at risk. That’s why it’s more important than ever to keep pushing to protect and extend our right to roam.

It’s easy to see the benefits that better access to nature brings by looking at examples in Scotland and across Scandinavia. Our campaign aims to bring these same opportunities to people in England, giving everyone the chance to explore, connect with, and care for our countryside.
