Researchers recently asked Americans what income level other people need in order to live a good life.

A whopping 86% of Americans reported income levels well below what others say they themselves need.

Fascinating!

Because I have been such a good boy (once again), 🎅 has an early present for me: here's a brand-new (open access) article discussing the use of #radicalright as a concept in current scholarship.

And if that wasn't already great (it is), there's more 1/3

This is a really cool paper!

"support for the radical right ... is intricately linked to various aspects of car culture in rural regions. ... youths with an interest in cars are significantly more likely to support the radical right."
I wrote an article about cars and correlations: EPA-tractors, youth engine interest, and racing events correlate with radical right support in Sweden—especially around 2022. Correlation ≠ causation, but cultural markers co-vary with political change.

Recent research has suggested that the rise of the radical right in rural regions can partly be explained by rural identities. Yet, the nuances of how cultural identities and political allegiances ar...

Radical right parties in Europe have not moderated. Their positions and rhetoric have entered the mainstream. They have become normalized and legitimized. Unless we understand this, we have little chance of countering their success.
In many parts of Europe populist-right parties have moderated as they have grown, shedding unpopular policies and personnel. If anything, the AfD in Germany is growing more radical econ.st/3KSptMm

Fascinating new research in AJPS (flagship poli sci journal) on Christian nationalism & SCOTUS

"An ecclesiastical court: Christian nationalism and perceptions of the US Supreme Court"

"We find that CN is related to Court attitudes in three ways:"

It’s not a term I use myself. But in my 30 years as a researcher, I’ve come across many concepts referring to more or less the same parties; some stick, others don’t

When I began studying radical right parties 30 years ago, many called them "flash parties" and expected them to vanish as quickly as they appeared. They didn’t. Will their support and power keep growing? Possibly, maybe even likely in the short run, but not inevitably. There is no determinism here.
