Pressure to cooperate with opposition parties and the temptation to normalize cooperation with the far right could shake German politics profoundly… as we enter yet another super election year 2026 with a total of five state elections...

The new edition of the "Grand coalition" is very different from previous ones, though... Weak position in the second chamber (Bundesrat), internal criticism, and inter-coalition struggles challenge the new coalition and highlight necessary adaptations to the so-called “Grand Coalition State”

BSW and Liberals fell short of the required 5%, which gave Christian and Soc Dems a majority of seats even without a majority of votes. Amid internal discord over the coalition contract and Merz historically failing the first chancellor investiture vote, the coalition took office in March 2025.

Voter turnout hit an all-time high at 82.5%. Christian dems came out on top, while the traffic light partners lost percentage points. The far-right AfD surged to 20.8% and the Left Party gained significantly.

After the short, harsh campaign, dominated by migration, a Grand Coalition of Christian and Social Dems emerged as the new government. This edition, however, differs in functioning and parliamentary constraints.

Polls show Social Dems, Greens, and Christian Dems losing support, while the Left party surged. Far-right AfD surged to 2nd strongest, newly formed BSW and Liberals struggling to meet the parliamentary threshold.

This triggered early elections with a campaign over immigration and the cordon sanitaire. A record number of chancellor candidates ran, though all deeply unpopular.

Conflicts over the energy response to Russia’s war and a Constitutional Court’s budget ruling proved decisive. The progressive agenda that the government had agreed to did no longer work. With approval at historic lows across voter groups, the coalition finally collapsed in Nov 2024

Dropping approval ratings over the course of the parliamentary term mirror mounting tensions within the traffic light coalition (Social Dem, Greens, Liberals).

Same old, same old?

Germany held an early election after the implosion of the traffic-light coalition in Feb 25. Some takeaways from our election report @klingelt.bsky.social @wepsocial.bsky.social
