How can we preserve history when the infrastructures of memory are constantly under attack - by war, by radical shifts of regimes, by the rewriting of narratives? Born in Diyarbakir, a city scarred by civil war, Kurdish artist Ahmet Ögüt approaches art not as an object but as a political and social situation. In this installation, Ogüt returns to the fragile traces of two exhibitions that have largely disappeared from art history: Palestinian Painting (Zacheta, 1980) and the International Art Exhibition for Palestine (Beirut, 1978). The archive of the former is incomplete, neglected as part of Poland's inconvenient socialist past; the latter was almost entirely destroyed, along with its collection of nearly 200 works, during Israeli bombings of Beirut in 1982. As a gesture of care, Ogüt has recreated two works from these vanished archives: Hosni Radwan's In Memory of Palestine and Janet Venn Brown's Zionist Crime, October 1972. Traditionally, copies are considered a lesser form, mere craft. Here, however, replication becomes a subversive act: restoring erased histories, resisting disappearance, and placing them back into the public sphere. Ögüt first applied this method in 2024, recreating works from art collections evacuated from war-torn Kharkiv. By extending the gesture to Palestinian archives, he bridges geographically distant conflicts, underlining our interdependence and the possibility of new translocal solidarities. For Zacheta, Ogüt presents these copies behind panes of magic glass - disappeared and destroyed artworks become visible only when viewers stand directly in front of them. The artist thus shows the vulnerability not only of art but also of fragile human lives and connections. Framed against two large murals that reproduce the visual codes of the 1978 and 1980 exhibitions, his installation restores visibility to what was nearly lost. Sie verfolgen die Demonstrationen von zu Hause über Livestreams der Szene. Wie machen Sie das konkret? Je nach Größe habe ich zehn bis fünfzehn Streams gleichzeitig offen - verteilt auf mehrere Geräte. Zwei davon höre ich mit Ton, die anderen laufen im Blickfeld ohne Audio. Manche zeigen Reden, andere Situationen an Polizeiketten. Kombiniert man diese Perspektiven, erkennt man Zusammenhänge, die vor Ort kaum auffallen. Aus einzelnen Fragmenten entsteht ein sehr klares Gesamtbild. Man sieht genau, wie einzelne Wortführer sich über die gesamte Versammlung hinweg bewegen, welche Signale sie setzen und wie die Menge darauf reagiert. Die Form der parallelen Beobachtung erlaubt außerdem, Widersprüche zwischen einzelnen Selbstdarstellungen sofort zu erkennen.

Part of the Chanukah tradition is to place the light menorah either outside or in a window where outsiders can see it. This is supposed to advertise the miracle of Chanukah. These days, it is also a way of saying, “This is a Jewish home.”

Every year I think about how it is also an act of bravery.

Compare the statement about the antisemitic terror attack in Australia by the Israeli Prime Minister with the one by Zohran Mamdani, and ask yourself who more truly cares about condemning antisemitism, as opposed to using it to promote unrelated politics.

Tonight, as Jewish New Yorkers light menorahs and usher in a first night of Hanukkah clouded by grief, let us look to his example and confront hatred with the urgency and action it demands. When I am Mayor, I will work every day to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe—on our streets, our subways, at shul, in every moment of every day. Let this be a purpose shared by every New Yorker, and let us banish this horrific violence to the past."

“I want to believe there will come a day when children in Gaza learn the word “زنانة” only in a history lesson, and laugh at how strange it sounds in their mouths, disconnected from any personal memory. A day when “هدنة” describes a distant political concept in a chapter about past wars, rather than the fragile fabric of daily survival that can tear at any moment. A day when “نزوح” has no place in personal biography, no appearance in family WhatsApp groups, no role in the simple act of answering the question “Where do you live now.” Until that day arrives, I will keep stretching the limits of speech, sentence by sentence. I will keep returning softness to a vocabulary corroded by necessity, inserting small words of affection and ordinary detail into narratives that the world prefers to read only as tragedy. I will keep writing long, careful sentences in a place that tries to make every word short, because length itself becomes a declaration that we are still here, thinking in more than one line at a time. Language, even under siege, deserves air, and as long as I can place words on a page, I will refuse to let that air be taken from it.”
