I did an interview with Faculti about my three decades of research in the far right.

Senior hires, particularly transatlantic, work best if they are approached holistically and slowly, through open and honest conversations between the university and the scholar(s), to ensure that both get what they are looking for and stay together till retirement.

That said, I do know it will help out several people, particularly post-docs and close-to-retirement-in-the-US people, I would imagine.

But many initiatives would have profited from advice of senior academics with experience in the U.S. system.

Thank you for the support and suggestions for jobs abroad. Unfortunately, most initiatives do not seem to understand the complexities of senior hires and of moving families abroad โ€” setting very short deadlines, offering often short-term positions (and no spousal options).

Dank Giselinde. Bijna al deze programmas zijn ofwel tijdelijk ofwel moet een universiteit het initiatief ertoe nemen. Daarbij ben ik natuurlijk niet alleenโ€ฆ

Congratulations! Great school.

WTF?!? How did I miss thisโ€ฆ and how am I not even really surprised?

IF they are going to publish the Epstein Files, it will be on Friday night, followed by a crazy distraction on Saturday (Venezuela?).

Heb het gezien, maar lijkt me meer op STEM gefocust.

I just held my last International Office Hours of 2025. Only 1 person had signed up (didn't advertise it much), which was probably better as I'm low energy today.

Next semester I teach 2 undergraduate courses again, so I will devote my office hours to my own students.

Thanks to all who showed up!

This is a good time to remind people that, in absolute terms, there are far more Trump supporters in California and New York than in Georgia or Tennessee.

They are around you, you just donโ€™t want to hear them - in part because they donโ€™t fit your stereotypes.

This is in part because of a very strong Coastal/Northern chauvinism towards "fly-over country". When I would talk about politics in Georgia, it would often be dismissed as "Southern", almost hereditary. As if racism only exists in the South.

But this is very much how I have been feeling since at least the Tea Party, but certainly Trump 1, as I read the "liberal" media or talked to intellectuals on the Coasts.

It is also striking how many "liberals" in the Coastal cities pretend they don't know Trump supporters.

To be clear, I am NOT a "Cassandra - I neither predicted neither Trump nor the rise to power of the far right.

I am also sure that the author of the piece will feel my views are too moderate or minimizing of the danger - more like the coastal columnists than the "Cassandras".

This ๐Ÿ’ฏ% ๐Ÿ‘‡

"The result is a preposterous dynamic in which (non-elite) Cassandras, who often live in red areas and talk to MAGA zealots every day, are lectured on understanding them by columnists who may have never talked to one, on their own turf, in their entire lives."

Call them the Cassandras: the peopleโ€”mostly not white and maleโ€”who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they โ€œalarmists,โ€ and how did โ€œanti-alarmismโ€ become cool?

Every foreign collleague I talk to tells me they feel unsafe and are looking to leave the U.S.

In "More than a Shirt" Joey D'Urso uses soccer jerseys to tell stories of political developments around the globe. A very clever idea, even if the book is much more about politics than about soccer.

This is a long-term problem for both the economy and democracy, particularly as long as center-left parties refuse to introduce measures that will RADICALLY redistribute wealth.
