corybookerDecember 14, 202524 Kislev 5786As Alexis and I settle in to light our first Hanukkah candles as a married couple, our hearts ache in the aftermath of two mass shootings - one at Brown University, and another at a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The latter was yet another horrific terrorist attack in which Jews were targeted solely because they were Jewish. As we light our menorah tonight, we hold the victims and their families close. We are praying for those who are injured, mourning those whose lives were taken in such senseless violence, and grieving with communities shattered by hate.Alexis is Jewish, and I am Christian. Together, and alongside people of faith across the world, we share a painful truth: horrific things do happen. Darkness does come. Wretched evil does exist. The violence of this weekend is meant to strike fear into the hearts of those who will kindle their menorahs tonight. Religious violence is rising, and antisemitism, both here in the United States and around the world, including in Australia, is surging in particularly horrific and too often violent ways. But Hanukkah calls us to resist fear.Happy Hanukkah. May the spirit of this holiday - the improbable victory of the Maccabees, and the oil that burned for eight nights - inspire us now.Perhaps the true miracle of Hanukkah is that more than 2,000 years later, despite horrors, pogroms, the Holocaust, and ongoing hatred, the Jewish people still create light. Still make latkes. Still spin dreidels. Still sing defiant songs of joy. Still gather, still love, still hope. Each time we choose light over darkness, we become part of the ongoing miracle of Hanukkah. From our new family to yours, we wish you a meaningful and joyful Hanukkah. And we hold you in our prayers for peace.Alexis and Cory

Why is it that practically all the posts extollolling the heroics of Ahmed (which is deserved) wilfully ignore and fail to post that the two heinous killers who murdered 15 innocents and seriously injured dozens more at a Chanukah celebration were Islamists/Muslims?

An eyewitness recounts the horror of the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia.

The young non-Jewish man described the traumatic sight: a human brain on the ground, and elderly people and children injured and bleeding.

It was a massacre.
Horrified by the terrorist attack in Australia targeting Jewish people celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.

Antisemitism has no place in this world.

As so many light their candles tonight, we’ll come together to pray for a future where the light will triumph over darkness.

At least 11 people were killed and 60 injured in Sydney for celebrating Chanukah, a Jewish holiday.

Not for being Zionists. Not for being “Israeli colonizers.” Not to support Palestinians. Not for land.

They were murdered simply for being Jewish.

aijac_update"The families of the Beautiful Six (Hersh, Carmel, Ori, Eden, Almog, and Alex) want to thank the people of Israel and the millions around the world who watched the harrowing footage of our loved ones with us.Lighting Hanukkah candles in that dark place captures the essence of the Jewish spirit: light prevailing over darkness.Hamas filmed these videos as propaganda, but the humanity of the beautiful six shines through this footage. It is stronger than any terrorist organization. These videos bear witness to evil and failure. The entire world must see our loved ones in these moments, their unity, strength, and humanity even in the darkest times. They were taken alive, they survived in captivity, and they should have come home alive. Our families want to remind everyone that the mission isn’t over. We’re calling for the immediate return of hero Roni Gvili, the shield of Kibbutz Alumim. And we’re calling on every family in Israel: when you gather to light Hanukkah candles, remember our loved ones and all the families of soldiers, the wounded, the hostages, the murdered, and the fallen who will never light candles together again."
