Thomas Diez is a German professor of Political Science and International Relations at the Institute for Political Science, University of Tübingen. He was formerly Professor of International Relations Theory in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham, where he was Head of department from 2005 to 2008. Diez earned his PhD at the University of Mannheim. He was formerly a Research Fellow at the Copenhagen Peace Research Institute where he worked with Barry Buzan and Ole Waever. He studies international relations theory, European integration and conflict transformation and is best known for his contributions to the debate on the European Union's normative power. Books he has edited or co-edited include The EU and the Cyprus Conflict: Modern Conflict, Postmodern Union, European Integration Theory and The European Union and Border Conflicts, Cyprus: A Conflict at the Crossroads and An Introduction to International Relations Theory: Perspectives and Themes. .. more

The statement by #EUHR @kajakallas.bsky.social on the US attack on #Venezuela is appalling. An attack on another country, whether by #Putin or #Trump, without #UNSC legitimisation is a gross violation of int'l law & needs clear condemnation, independent of what you think about the attacked regime.

Russlands Überfall auf die Ukraine im Februar 2022 hat nicht nur die Politik, sondern auch die Theorie der Internationalen Beziehungen kalt erwischt. Seitdem prägen intertheoretische Sprachlosigkeit oder Besserwisserei die Debatte. Wir entwickeln diesbezüglich drei Argumente: (1) Während es wichtig und richtig war, den Begriff der Sicherheit seit den 1980er Jahren nicht mehr nur militärisch zu fassen, ist die im internationalen System immer präsente Kriegsgefahr zu sehr zu einem Spezialthema einzelner Subdisziplinen geworden und muss wieder stärker in den Mittelpunkt der Theoriediskussion rücken. (2) Die Debatte über die Verteidi- gung oder Diskreditierung von Liberalismus und Realismus leidet nicht nur unter einer problematischen Vereinfachung beider Ansätze auf einige wenige plakative Aussagen, sondern auch unter einer bemerkenswerten Missachtung des theoreti- schen Pluralismus in den Internationalen Beziehungen, der sich spätestens seit den 1990er Jahren etabliert hat. Die Theoriediskussion muss hier in beiderlei Hinsicht differenzierter und offener für fremde Argument werden. (3) Zu einer solchen Of- fenheit gehört auch ein echter Dia- bzw. Heterolog zwischen den Ansätzen, ohne sie dabei gleich zu einer Großtheorie verschmelzen zu können oder zu wollen. Anstatt den Krieg in der Ukraine als Beweisführung für die Überlegenheit der einen oder anderen Theorie zu benutzen, mahnen wir dazu, in der Vielfalt der IB-Theorie nach Argumenten und Thesen zu suchen, die uns helfen, Ursachen wie Folgen des Krieges in ihren unterschiedlichen Dimensionen zu erfassen. Ein solcher Heterolog ist nicht nur wünschenswert, sondern auch möglich, wenn sich die Beteiligten über den Anspruch und die Reichweite ihrer Theorien klarer sind und ihr Augenmerk nicht auf der Verteidigung ihrer eigenen oder der Diskreditierung anderer Theorien liegt, sondern auf den Herausforderungen des Krieges.
