One figure that didn't make the cut in the blog post (suggested by @eloquentscience.com) compares the temperature changes from the Dec 2022 front to others in the literature. It had faster temperature drops than all the other cold fronts, but not the incredible Spearfish, SD event from 1943.

It hasn't been cold this December, but 3 years ago it got cold in a hurry. Do you remember the cold front on December 21, 2022? It was extreme in all kinds of ways, which you can read about in this blog post.

Among the highlights: the temperature dropped almost 25°F in ten seconds in Akron! #cowx
A look back at the "big chill" from three years ago - Colorado Climate Blog
There hasn’t been much cold weather to speak of so far this winter in Colorado. [In case you missed it, here’s last week’s post with a look at those numbers, which are pretty bleak if you like winter....

Well said.

Very sad. My friends brought me into rock climbing. We climbed there in the early 2000s, right after they opened.

I just received a peer-review request from a journal. The deadline? January 2.

Clearly, no one thinking about what they are doing at that journal.

"the plan being to fully close the center's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado"

This seems rather specific. When DOGE started, they targeted leases and govt buildings. I wonder if the goal was to sell off the leases/properties to real estate developers. Mesa Lab sure would be a prize for someone.

Just for clarity, this is an executive order, not a law.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

Best part of the lecture:
"Joni Mitchell turning up in the clouds lecture."

Other comments:
"Dave is a good lecturer & his jokes were under-appreciated. Tough crowd."

I've enjoyed reading this book. Lots of good practical nuggets in there to help become a better leader. Many dog-eared pages. Thank you for writing it.
First copies of my book are here!! As a new faculty member, I realized that in addition to my research job, I also had a leadership job…and I wasn’t prepared for that.

This book is the guide I wish I’d had then, with the goal of helping others now.

Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it.

And no reviewers objected? WTF.🧪
