Was finally able to see #JuliannaRiolino tonight in Londontario on the first night of her 2026 tour, and she was SO good - as was her band.

If you like the Blue Rodeo / Kathleen Edwards type stuff - with a bit of extra fun - Juliannaโ€™s your girl. She plays Guelph tomorrow. Love her new album, too!

This is exactly the reason that what Danielle Smith is doing, coddling Alberta separatists, is playing with some serious fire. Bannon and his ilk are rubbing their hands together at this glorious opportunity. I'm sure their work has already begun. #CanadaStrong
Great that people are noting Epsteinโ€™s role as a classic โ€˜disaster capitalistโ€™ along with Paul Marshall and Crispin Odey.

I wrote a week ago how he told Bannon โ€œBrexit is just the beginningโ€

Blame the stance on the headline writer - the article is actually quite balanced and informative, as CBC usually is.

The CSSL is supporting another storm-themed artistic experience, this time an exhibit at Western's McIntosh Gallery called 'Atmospheric Shifts'. Details and artist bios:

Below are some photos from my recent visit. I'm happy to have 2 of my own tornado prints up!

Day 2 of 2 for the #CatIQ Connect meeting in Toronto. Kathryn Bakos from the Intact Centre now speaking on the impacts of residential flooding on mental health. And their studies suggest those impacts are significant.
February 4, 2026 at 4:47 PM
Now the student delegate presentations (they had to compete for funding to attend and present at CatIQ Connect). This is Yao Li from Westernโ€™s Northern Hail Project showing some initial results from his model to predict socioeconomic impacts from a hailstorm. Thatโ€™s Jim Abraham doing the hosting.

Who would have thought that an EF4-rated tornado documented by the Northern Tornadoes Project in 2023 would inspire the classical piece โ€˜Didsbury for Viola Quartetโ€™?? And itโ€™s not the only piece inspired by NTP-investigated tornadoes (see below). #ArtMeetsScience
๐ŸŽปA viola quartet from Western recently took the stage at the 50th International Viola Congress in Paris, joining hundreds of violists from around the world. Four music students, along with prof Sharon Wei, performed "Sounding Tornadoes", a lecture recital collaboration with @westernuntp.bsky.social

And this - the โ€˜new normalโ€™ for insured losses from natural disasters across Canada is nearly $3B. And growing.

Day 1 of 2 for CatIQ Connect. A record number of catastrophes in 2025 were reviewed. Now hearing from Jeffery Hutchinson, ADM of Emergency Management with Public Safety Canada.

Thatโ€™s not a recent idiotic rant. I think thatโ€™s an older idiotic rant on the same topic.

Heads up! The deadline for applications for the 2026 Genesis Grant program has been extended until Friday, February 13, 2026.

Hoping to see some really creative ideas this round๐Ÿ’ก
The ImpactWX Genesis Grant is now accepting applications!

For the past 3 years Iโ€™ve served on the Advisory Council to support this grant which provides funding to community organizations developing new ideas related to severe weather response and awareness.

The Alberta separatist movement seemed to be nothing to worry about. Polling has continued to show little support for it there. But some ultraconservatives in the US, like Bannon, see this as an opportunity they need to make the most of. And some US politicians are falling in line. Time to worry.

I think you need to actually read the articles, Tom. It's investigative journalism, not editorial support. The Tyee is pretty much the opposite of what you're suggesting.

The latest Environment Canada Winter Storm Warning for Toronto calls for up to 60cm of snowfall accumulation near Lake Ontario. This lake-effect band / lake enhancement is really living up to expectations! If this is an โ€˜orangeโ€™ warning, I guess you really donโ€™t want to see a โ€˜redโ€™ warning. #ONstorm
January 25, 2026 at 11:45 PM
This innocent-looking band of lake-effect snow currently percolating over Lake Ontario will soon move north and west by an increasing ESE wind and will help to drop a lot of snow over the Toronto area. The warning says up to 40 cm. Thankfully happening on a Sunday. Good day to stay home! #ONstorm

So the other shoe drops. The orange despot has now had enough sycophants tell him that Carney has done bad things that he feels the need to act - so he's going for a 100% tariff.

If anyone still thinks that a CUSMA/USMCA deal is still possible after this past week, they are as delusional as he is.

I've seen some #terriblemaps of southern Ontario, but these take the cake. From something called learnontario.ca. The first map has the Greater Toronto Area in Michigan. The second map has Windsor near Chicago, Barrie close to James Bay, and Ottawa deep into Quebec. #AIslop that needs removal asap.
January 24, 2026 at 1:05 PM
Coldest temps of 2026 in Southern Ontario. As of 7 am, some -38 to -39C obs in northeastern sections. A -31C in the GTA(!) - at TRCA's 'LITTLE ROUGE AT 16TH' station. Even a -23C in Windsor(!). There is one -40C near Sudbury, but that's likely in Northern Ontario. Note - not wind chills values!
