I consider myself a lefty even by Nordic standards and have been called a communist often enough by the far right loons. Because I do maintain that billionaires are system errors and we need to redistribute resources fairly if we want to have a future worth having.
BTW for those who don’t know me yet, below is a TL;DR of my political beliefs. Am an anarcho-Social Democrat :D.
Rawls, Sen and Nussbaum fill out most of the details. The Veil of Ignorance (extended to include ignorance about the _species_ one is born into) and Capability Approach especially.

On a serious note, Japanese society is, despite superficial appearances, probably less racially hung up than Europe. Manners and acculturation matter more. "More Japanese than the Japanese" is a genuine compliment given that aspects of "being Japanese" can be challenging even for native born.

Good news: more than 50% of the world’s economies have seen carbon emissions from fossil fuel power generation peaking. And with the speed of change in the electricity sector many more will join this growing list in coming years.

They didn’t see to that at home which has left the BBC vulnerable.

Well, this is quite a serious allegation. I do hope the BBC shows true impartiality and investigate whether or not some of its Board members are systemically biased. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/n...

Telan johtaja Antti Tanskanen vaatii realismia keskusteluun eläkeiän nostosta. Hän sanoo, että eläkeiän nosto ei yksin ratkaise julkisen talouden ongelmia.

My junior high school had a fantastic slot car track in its bomb shelter!
English schools don't have a bomb shelter next to the gym. This is weird. I mean, where do you store all the hoopla rings, basketballs, etc?

More than that, countries broadly following the (Nordic) Social Democratic model are at or very near the top of practically every measurement of societal achievement _ever devised_.
All measurements have issues and any one statistic could be flawed.
But when they all point to the same direction…

Finland tops the global happiness index, which suggests that other countries should use it as a model.

Reading this 2022 archived thread on Finnish defence policy by @jmkorhonen.fi, it strikes me how many things which I and most Finns take for granted probably aren't so abroad.
Still jealous of those who went home by train, I went by bus and got travel sick.

Total defense policy is also visible most Fridays, when the conscripts go home for the weekend. (One Japanese lady once asked me at the Helsinki main railway station, "is this a military base, because there are so many people in camoflage uniform?") 15/

E.g, I believe the evidence strongly suggests that out of all human-tested schemes so far, the #Nordic Social #Democracy has been if not the best, then at the very least the least bad way to organize an industrialized society.
Despite its many flaws.

I too remember being somewhat surprised when learning that not every country has bomb/fallout shelters (with blast doors and air purification machinery) in every basement.
The funny thing is that it took me decades to fully realise comprehensive security isn't the norm everywhere. Despite my being both British and Finnish. It's so taken-for-granted normal. Almost boringly normal.

I think there is an element of every far right movement that genuinely loathes its own country. That it is in Finnish hands promoting Finnish culture is something that revolts them because they are digusted by what Finland is compared to whatever nightmare of perpetual violence and misery they wish.

They have a habit of being highly corrupt, fundamentally destructive people with little interest in the culture & history of their own country. They're not nationalists in the same way.
