I misread the synopsis for Szalay’s Booker Prize novel: “This book opens with the poltergeist, István, as a shy and awkward adolescent living in a Hungarian housing project.”

It’s “protagonist” not “poltergeist”, but I would also read a novel about a shy and awkward Hungarian poltergeist.

Read books and get cultured, kids, or Joyce Carol Oates will get you.
Joyce Carol Oates said what everyone’s been thinking and did it with elegance.

I somehow ended up reading a novel in the splatterpunk genre called Gone to See the River Man (2020) by Kristopher Triana. It was an OK read, but I'm probably not going to review it out of fear.

I'm trying to get into a specific film genre after running out of horror films, but it's tricky. I'm trying out westerns and film noir, but there is a boredom hump I cannot get over.

On the bright side, I came up with a new (at least to me) concept: boredom hump.

Checked in on US politics this morning. It looks like the Democrats, once again, are trying their darnedest to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I have trouble with the phrase “ethical use of AI”. How can it be ethical if LLMs are based on theft?

I wrote two songs this week. One of them has the line: "My dog won't bite, but it barks like a SOB." Am I proud of myself? No, but also yes.

I watched the new Twisters movie today. I thought it was an exciting film about the importance of funding science projects.

"Selvityksen mukaan Uudellamaalla oli työttömiä korkeakoulutettuja 80 prosenttia enemmän kuin vuonna 2019 eli ennen koronapandemiaa."

En ymmärrä, miksei näin hurja työttömyyden kasvu ole lietsonut meitä paniikkiin ja hätätilaan.

Eratosthenes mittasi noin vuonna 240 eaa. maapallon ympärysmitan mittaamalla kahden obeliskin varjot. Obeliskit olivat 800 km päässä toisistaan. Eratosthenes palkkasi tyypin mittaamaan kävellen obeliskien etäisyydet.

Mittaajan duuni on aika hyvä esimerkki perustutkimuksen tärkeydestä.

People say "AI", and it could mean analyzing large data sets, expediting cancer diagnoses or giving a tech company everyone's personal data so you can let a chatbot write your emails or cheat on you exams. Or anything in between.

The discourse is all vibes if the topic is so vague.
I think 'hating AI' is shorthand for 'hating AI the way oligarchs are inflicting it on society' and unfortunately we don't get a lot of nuance

I'm with you, AI as a tech has many beneficial potential uses but tech in general doesn't tend to be used for the greater good first out the gate

I’ve been listening to Thomas Ligotti’s collection of short stories Noctuary and the Spectral Link (2023) for about two weeks. I’m not sure what to make of it. I like the stories …
