I had to try to explain JCO to my mother tonight. She was like "isn't she just an author?" and I was like "no, you don't understand, she's an eldritch poster" and she doesn't know what that means and trying to explain JCO is so difficult

smallpox eradication is one of the greatest achievement of humans, up there with 'hey maybe we should wash our hands'
Smallpox was so bad that two nations who were threatening to nuke everyone and everything agreed on eradication.

I was cycling once and got clotheslined by a fucking turkey, wiped out on a gravel road, I still have scars where my sister had to pick gravel out of my leg with tweezers
My ex step-cousin was riding his bike to school in Utah, and a deer bolted out of a bush and leveled him. Pancaked. Istg
I once had to get out of my car and physically manhandle two deer out of the driveway so I could leave, which was certainly an Excuse for being late to school that day

This is a delightful read about a really fun, not uniquely British phenomenon but definitely not a worldwide one, on Hollow Ways, which I personally consider to be deeply sacred spaces

the college campus in lowest Appalachia where my parents lived for the last twenty years, deer outnumber people 13-1 and that is not an exaggeration and also only applies to the populated area of campus, not the entire thing
In my CNY “town” they got in professional sharpshooters (‘cos not allowed to hunt in a lot of the places the deer hang out), which helped. There are still plenty deer around, just in less less WTF? quantities.

Sometimes I tell ppl the story of how a deer hit my sister’s car when she was 16 and flipped her into a ditch and now she’s scared of driving and you can always tell who grew up in the city because they’ll go “don’t you mean SHE hit the deer?”

no I do not
"Oh wow a deer so graceful so beautiful" a person with minimal personal experience with deer which are expensive car seeking missiles that your neighbors feed because 'there'll be a monster buck next year'

unfortunately for me I can do this with sugar, booze, or caffeine and you can usually tell which one I’ve resorted to by reading the finished product
Absolutely devastating for my blood sugar levels that when I simply cannot persuade myself to write something ove been procrastinating the only thing that works is to buy a big bag of haribo and eat it at my desk as I type, getting more and more antsy and typing faster and faster as the sugar hits.

this is one way to find out that my husband is secretly an angel
Madeleine L’Engle kinda made it sound so in “Many Waters”. Like the resulting babies were gigantic and hard to deliver, if I remember correctly.

There are many subtle and complex arguments one can have about the future of the BBC — but I guarantee you that no other channel or streaming service will be as committed to factual programming, children’s education, history shows, religious discussion, poetry, arts, or state of the nation debate
