Hard agree. Nacho Vigalondo did the terrific Timecrimes and this was part of I think Hulu making kind of offbeat sf/horror flicks early on.
Anne Hathaway recently posted on her insta that more people should see her 2016 movie Colossal (available for free on Netflix in the USA or to rent from streaming platforms here). So I did. And she is right. boxd.it/d967Gv
A ★★★★½ review of Colossal (2016)
What starts as a strange tale of how a woman’s alcoholism in America appears to be connected to a rampaging monster in downtown Seoul becomes something at once darker, more surprising and yet sadly mo...

Finished Willeford’s Pick Up (1955) and it was really excellent. Less quirky than his later work but just as existential. Any noir lit fans would be amiss not to read it, and it’s another good excuse to point to the “Any crime book worth a damn is a variation on Crime and Punishment” sign 🤌 #booksky

PHOENICIAN SCHEME makes for an oddly delicious double feature with ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS. Great fun, kind of an action film. I can't help thinking Wes Anderson would make a terrific Tintin feature film. Ligne claire. 🔥 #filmsky

Finally saw Howard Hawks' ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS. Terrific screenplay performed with gusto by a great cast, directed with panache. Of special interest to fans of early aviation and, especially, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Classic adventure filmmaking with wit, heart, romance and excitement. #FilmSky

Tanith Lee's NIGHT'S MASTER feels like a companion piece to Italo Calvino's INVISIBLE CITIES... "The snake had learned the speech of man centuries before, for hatred and jealousy must find a tongue; only the creatures which never feel those things have no need to talk." #BookSky #TanithLee

Good words to know, @ellen-friedman.bsky.social. "Gloaming" is too seldom used. "Yclept" is good. "Apricity" is just wonderful.

Started AND finished Calvino's INVISIBLE CITIES today. Curious, engaging, fun, if slight. One of those books that make you want to put it down and write instead of reading. Reminded me of those fortean tales of mirage-like floating cities R.A. Lafferty, Ulrich Magin and others wrote about. #BookSky

Had my first Turkish coffee today. In good company to boot. Nice occasionally talking books, music, movies and other random subjects over lunch, hatching new publishing plans and burying others. 👀

Finished MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION. Terrific and frustrating, haunting and funny, intelligent but in a deeply cranky manner. Saw the form of the ending quite early, but its granular detail was unimaginably jarring perfection. Overall for me, memorably good, not great. #BookSky #OttessaMosfegh
