“Despite thousands of years of innovations and breathtaking scientific advances, you'd be more likely to survive if you were marooned on a tropical island with a tradesman or farmer from ancient Rome or medieval England than with most modern professionals.” - @brianklaas.bsky.social

After they left, Mamdani went to the library to look for Marx, and then took a class on Mark. And that’s how Mamdani Senior was introduced to Karl Marx! (3/3)

ps. Mamdani Sr.’s books had a big impact on me in grad school. And turns out we both went to Fletcher.

Mamdani Senior: “I haven’t met him.”

FBI: “No, no, he’s dead.”

M: “Wow, what happened?”

FBI: “No, no, he died long ago.”

M: “Why are you asking me, if he died long ago?”

FBI: “No, he wrote a lot. He wrote that poor people should not be poor.”

M: “Sounds amazing.”

One of my favorite stories about Mamdani’s father, who was jailed during the civil rights march in Montgomery in 1965:

Weeks after he got out, the FBI paid him a visit. They asked why he was at the march, and who had influenced him. An hour into the interrogation, they asked, “Do you like Marx?”

Whoa: This highway outside Paris can charge your EV while you drive – at a whopping 300 kW (!)

Can’t do that with ICE motors!
This approach could significantly reduce the size, weight and materials needed for EV batteries, (eg, for buses), without compromising uptime!

It’s been *totally* overcast for 6 (!) days in a row now ☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️

So I went back to the mountaintops this morning in search of the sun. 🏔️🇨🇭

Found another sunny spot above the clouds in the Swiss Alps today (during my lunch break). Perhaps a good reminder about life in general: “Above the clouds it is always sunny.” 🏔️🇨🇭

Today in the Swiss Alps. I love this cloud effect over the lake. Only happens 2-3 times a year during colder months. During the winter it’s so dark & grey below the clouds (see next photo in thread), so finding the sun & blue skies on mountain tops is one of my favorite things about planet Earth. 🏔️🇨🇭

On my way from Lausanne to Berlin by train. So much more comfortable than dealing with airports and airplanes. More importantly, far better for the climate! Just 8 more hours to go 🚅 🚃🚃🚃🚃 #SlowTravel #Trains

Remember the part in “V For Vendetta” when the late-night comedy host gets canceled for upsetting the dictator?

From the 1878 World Fair in Paris, this solar energy concentrator could heat water and produce steam. It also produced ice. The inventor, Augustin Mouchot, also experimented with the conversion of solar energy into electricity, nearly 150 years ago!
