Our guide to approaching (and starting!) conversations about NCAR and the importance of weather and climate science. #SaveNCAR
There aren't a lot of resources for what people can do to prevent the destruction of NCAR, so I made this:

#NCAR #climate #climatescience #weather #meteorology #activism #myresources

The word “climate” goes back at least to the 14th century, with fairly modern connotations by the 16th century. I vote we keep the word, and use it when appropriate. www.etymonline.com/word/climate
Climate - Etymology, Origin & Meaning
"horizontal zone of the earth's surface measured by lines parallel to the equator," from… See origin and meaning of climate.

I just spent much of last week telling people that I think NCAR is mostly safe and we just need to see what the NSF budget ends up being. I think Russ Vought is just trolling me.
AGU has a Congressional email and call script up on NCAR:
Save NCAR from being dismantled today!
The Trump Administration has vowed to dissolve the center that provides critical extreme weather and climate data for our nation.

Today we discuss the news that NCAR, a critical cog in weather research has been targeted to be dismantled by the Trump Administration and why that's a really, really bad decision. We also connect NCAR to ongoing atmospheric river events. More below or at theeyewall.com.
As atmospheric river events bear down on the West Coast, U.S. weather research that helps public safety and the economy continues to be credibly threatened
The Trump Administration plans to gut NCAR, one of the most valuable, important, and effective weather and climate research centers on Earth

At the No Kings protest in Farmington, MI today. I’ve been signing multiple petitions; good to see democracy being valued!
😍 Boston, you are beautiful. #NoKings
I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

NASA confirmed the (sudden, I heard from employees) resignation of Joseph Pelfrey from his role as director of Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Huge employer in the state, critical to human spaceflight initiatives at the US space agency.... www.cnbc.com/2025/09/25/n...

Meanwhile, here are the weather balloon launches from this morning. The red dots indicate locations that missed the launch today owing to short staffing. The blue dots indicate long-term outages.

NASA is being told to cancel 19 *active* missions to save $6B, which looks to be less than the ICE *hiring/retention* budget going forward.

I need people to let that sentence sink into their bones for a minute.
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

This article is about State, but the broader point is that the morale is down across the federal government, government contractors, academia, and most of the “knowledge worker” class in this country because of the existential dread looming over them.

ICECHIP Field Day is tomorrow from 2-4 pm MDT for open viewing to the general public in Boulder, CO! Come see our instruments and talk to us before we head to the Plains! More information in the flyer below.

These jets are more than $50MILLION each. That could cover a lot of science research that actually has an ROI.

Just received this lovely note from the Dept. of Commerce. Always great hearing DOC say "Look we're forced to do this and say you weren't fired for performance issues and part of a government wide mass termination. But don't worry we think that's wrong and we're gonna fight it tooth and nail."

This episode of Plain English is highly recommended. Three interesting interviews that delve into how the American science endeavor works, and thoughts about how it could be better. Spoiler: destroying the system is not the answer.
