ICYMI: the first American Meteorological Society meeting during Trump 2.0 showed the many issues facing the weather enterprise - but also the incredible talent and resilience of a scientific community still fully committed to improving its service to society. More: tinyurl.com/4nwypts9
Taking the pulse of the atmospheric sciences community at the AMS Annual Meeting: Down, but nowhere near out
A year of Trump Administration 2.0 has brought a lot of difficulties to the scientific world - but I found the determination to keep moving service to society forward undiminished

For those familiar w/ "ARkStorm/ARk2.0" flood scenarios for California, a comparable event has been unfolding on the Iberian Peninsula. These ridiculous rainfall accumulations, caused by a long series of extremely moist atmospheric rivers, have brought widespread severe flooding to Spain & Portugal.
Grazalema, Spain, received over 2,000 mm (78 inches) of rain in just the last 20 days.

Over a year’s worth of rain — and it’s only early February. This is hydrologically absurd.

HORRIFYING -
Dismantling USAID & cancelling >80% of aid caused ~750,000 deaths by mid-2025

🧸Most were children
⌛️ Many died within the first year

😰 Preventable deaths were mainly from:

Took a look today at how and why the weather has been so persistently warm in the West and cold in the East - h/t to @weatherwest.bsky.social and @rschumacher.cloud for their great recent posts summarizing the precarious state of Western snowpack that I highlight in my post. tinyurl.com/3zhzd5b4

A pattern change this week will at least bring some improvement in both regions

Bad Bunny’s performance began in the plantation, featured broken electric poles, and ended by centering a hemispheric understanding of “América”—among many other things—and some Anglo journalists are like “his performance wasn’t political.”

This is why we need to be telling our stories.

I grew up on the sci-fi of Clarke and Asimov. I fully believe (OK, maybe after the last several years, hope) one day humanity will have the knowledge and wisdom to be able undertake crewed exploration of our solar system. But Elon the grifter has no business being humanity's lead on this effort.
SpaceX to focus on Moon settlements instead of Mars?!? Wow, it is hard to overstate what a change -- what a climb-down -- this is for Musk. It has always been Mars for him. Full stop. Supposedly the goal behind *everything* he does.

Great run, love watching luge!
USA's Ashley Farquharson has been the most consistent slider for the team over the last 3 years. LOTS of high hopes for the glitter-clad slider.

Ash with a good start, perfect entrance into 3, good control through 4. Just a great looking slide here, and she's into 4th, just .001 behind Hofer!!!

Puerto Rico hasn't had reliable power in a decade.

The grid sends occasional surges through the wires that fry appliances.

Electricity rates are among the highest in the entire U.S.

Heat waves are getting intense in the summer, and outages mean A/C is no guarantee for an aging population.

Especially now that the Pats have a couple of TDs and it won't be obvious in the score how dominant Seattle's D was, the primary thing that will be remembered from this Super Bowl will be Bad Bunny.
