Hi everyone!
I'm a planning professor at the University of Waterloo, researching housing, transportation & how they relate to each other.
I'm moving from Twitter & I'll post more here soon.
Here are links to some stuff I've written:

This article discusses some of the big reasons why I don’t permit AI and ChatGPT in any of my planning courses, especially first year courses where critical thinking skills are nurtured, developed and challenged.

Streetcars and skating and a sunny winter sky,
These are a few of my favourite things!

Merry Christmas! 🎄

Six years ago this month, I spent a lot of time photographing the final days of the CLRV streetcars. It wasn't that long ago, and still within memory of most people, yet so much has changed in the city and the wider world.
A good time to revisit these photos!

Insightful article on the housing crisis in Spain, and two very different approaches to address it in Madrid and Barcelona.

One of the Ontario Northland Railway's new Siemens passenger trainsets passed through Hamilton today on their way north. It's a pretty attractive train!

This article I wrote about lessons for Toronto from Waterloo's ION LRT is almost 2 years old, but still relevant, especially for discussions about how to speed up Finch West.
It's not a direct comparison, but ION shows that full signal priority is possible in Ontario!

How to fix the King Street streetcar fiasco
Three interrelated factors contribute to the success of Waterloo's ION transit line: it operates on its own right of way, traffic lights are synchronized, and it uses a clock face

Here’s a short video that combines some of my favourite things:
Winter and Christmas lights
Dedicated bike lane
Bike riding
A fast moving LRT
Enjoy!

There seems to be a lot of 'luck' factoring into the running time on Finch West. Much like a traditional streetcar or bus.
There's potential to turn this 'luck' into a regularly scheduled service with a predictable running time (i.e. Waterloo's ION) but much political work still to be done.

Wow! What a cool exhibit! Thanks for sharing, Rodney.
Checked out Toronto Reference Library’s “Retail Retrospective” Exhibit of old shopping bags!

I think my favorite is the “Shop Canadian” one with the “ONTARIO GOVERNMENT TRADE CRUSADE” text at the bottom. Feels like something Doug Ford would say.

The retro TPL logo is cool too.

No one before Sam successfully raised a child, which is why the human species went extinct in Mesopotamia. Seriously, the best way to read this is that countless billions of humans did just fine but Sam is not as competent and self-reliant as them, and that's what AI wants us to be: dependent.

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."
