i completely agree that this is the key problem with Bluesky discourse right now: The Circumstances are genuinely toxic right now.

log off.

go scream at an inanimate object.

dig a hole.

continue digging until you've got a burrow.

hide in the burrow.

do not bring your phone
my hot take is that I don't think it's this website specifically that's toxic. the Circumstances are toxic and nobody really knows what to do about it so they come online and scream. and if I may offer an alternative: actually going outside and screaming feels better.

Just saw this ad on Pluto. It's straight-up MAHA and anti-vax-coded: "Every healthy patient is a lost customer," "We can heal ourselves," etc.

It's slick and subtle and mainstreaming dangerous ideas.

Hey, and speaking of: ADORABLES ASSEMBLE.

My pro tip for dealing with negativity on this site is a trigger block finger and regularly asking for people to send you pictures of their pets. (Timeline cleanse!)

Maybe the most important: As SOON as things feel dogpile-y, get off for a few days. Like, immediately.

I am sure I will say more about this later but I'm in the process of moving every goddamn thing I do to this Patreon: patreon.com/anamariecox2

Rolling up the newsletter, writing workshop, and my burgeoning video essay empire (and all the other little things I was trying out) into this.

I'd like to hear from the whole spectrum of folks: newsletter/independent proprietors/freelancers/employees at MSM outlets.
I'm putting together a piece about how much investigative journalism actually costs. If you are an investigative journalist and you're willing to share (not for attribution) what you make and how many hours (years!) you put in, my DMs are open. Estimates fine, just want to get a sense of it.

I mean is it a fucking accident that Grok's enabler, Musk, is connected to the Epstein administration?
Elon Musk chatbot repeatedly making CSAM on demand should be one of the single biggest stories right now and it's effectively a collective shrug instead

It also seems relevant that the guy letting this happen is a part of the administration that's covering up the president's involvement with a sex-trafficker.

Yeah, it has long been the case that adult-oriented businesses have to be careful or risk the wrath of everyone from prosecutors to payment-processing companies, but "prominent social media company owned by world's richest person swiftly became world's largest CSAM producer" produces no reaction.

New: Trump admin officials tell Zeteo that Trump is “very interested” in secret plans drawn up last year to send US Special Forces into Mexico.

One official even says Trump recently asked for updates on preparations for a possible operation.
After Trump’s Venezuela Invasion, Mexico Could Be Next
Officials tell Zeteo that Trump remains ‘very interested’ in the idea of sending US Special Forces into Mexico, as the president threatens Colombia and Cuba, too.

Counterpoint: they are openly talking about “compliance.”
STEPHANOPOULOS: Why wasn't congressional authorization necessary?

RUBIO: It wasn't necessary because this was not an invasion. We didn't occupy a country. This was an arrest operation.
January 4, 2026 at 6:06 PM
Compliant!
Marco Rubio: "It had to be done. And it's been done. And I assure you the people left behind in Venezuela now that are in charge of the police and everything else, I assure you they are gonna probably be a lot more compliant than Maduro was as a result of this."

@dandock.bsky.social people keep recommending The Expanse books, are they good?
New book in Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series or the nine books in James SA Corey’s The Expanse are amazing.

I have no words.
Donald Trump is now reposting videos on Truth Social suggesting that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had Melissa Hortman assassinated.

This is objectively evil, and calling it out should not be political.

it's so stupid that a game between two eliminated teams will decide who makes the NFL playoffs. clearly they need a better system: having 12 athletic directors with obvious conflicts of interest sit in cloaks in a fancy hotel ballroom and decide which teams get in (one must be Alabama)

The fact that a warmonger president calls himself Christian and is cheered and primarily supported by Christians is one of the oldest and most egregious failures of Christianity - a failure to take seriously the Gospel’s commitment to peace and a cozying up to power. God hates war - full stop.
