My quick and dirty thoughts on Trump's short-sighted, stupid, and self-defeating ban on foreign made drones.

Banning foreign drones won't make us safer. Instead, it'll encourage people to build their own drones - which are way harder to track and to control.
The USA Bans Foreign-Made Drones, in Trump's Grand Idiot Tradition
It's December 23rd, and the USA has officially banned the import of all foreign made drones and "critical components." Here's a very quick and dirty run-down of my thoughts. Although if you'd like t...

like 75% of dem messaging right now should be “the party led by epsteins best friend is breaking into pre-k childcare centers so they can record your toddlers and put the videos on internet”
uhhh yeah I can see why these childcare properties weren't eager to let in some rando dudes asking "where are the kids?"

He asked me what I would say to the 4th graders who suggested the name if I met them. Good times!

“People aren’t going to like everything you do even if it’s successful, and it’s legitimate for them not to like it and you should get used to it” is what I said. 2/2

The results of the naming contest for the GRAIL probes were announced at a meeting in 2012. I noted on Twitter that I thought the winning names were dumb.

During a lunch break the NASA PSD director ran into me on the street and said “I hear you don’t like the names?”

AI is not only incapable of "seeing" most languages since they are not digitized, it is hastening their disappearance as young people abandon them in favor of languages that offer chatbots and other such resources.

A language is endangered when it has less than 100 users, and extinct when there are less than 10, mostly elderly, and basically nobody willing to learn it.

When a language no longer has users, the culture of that community - history, poems, science, songs...- is gone. We are all poorer for it.

in Ancient Rome, you’d chill with the homies at the public bathroom, sharing the single ass-wiping sponge on a stick (Xylospongium) amongst yourselves

got all the way to my metro stop in DC once before I realized I had two live cave crickets in my boot

(I grew up in the West so am accustomed to checking my boots for interlopers, but foolishly did not assume I had to do so in DC)
Check for scorpions in your boots, too!

the most surreal bathroom I’ve ever visited was definitely the World’s Biggest Public Restroom at the Meixin Foreigner Street theme park in Chongqing:

It’s a Weird World After All
It may not be Epcot, but Meixin Foreigner Street—featuring Christ the Redeemer’s smaller twin and the world’s largest public bathroom—hints at what China thinks of the rest of us.

that’s just the social shitter, as was the custom for the ancients (no, really)
Came across this cursèd arrangement in a cafe bathroom in Olympia about a decade ago.

Like everything the UAE does, it's technically incredible, and has no sense of pacing, dynamics, subtlety, or indeed any aesthetic beyond "impressive".
somehow it’s not surprising that the UAE just pulled off a drone show that is both the coolest and the most dystopian-future menacing that I’ve ever seen
