"Caitlin Flanagan, Chris Cilizza—these are not people who produce investigative journalism. These are take-merchants and mouthpieces who publish what powerful people tell them over text and DM as if it's a transgressive secret and not a comms strategy."
As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:

Notes from someone who's withstood White House demands to stop an explosive story—and who once even had a 60 Minutes piece spiked

Both Satanic Panic and QAnon are just remixes of anti-semitic blood libel. It's sort of shocking to realize how mainstream this stuff has always been in right wing Christianity, especially among evangelicals
We saw a revival of these witchcraft notions with QAnon. Kids weren’t “merely” abused or trafficked in some of that lore—they were being consumed, sacrificed, their blood transmuted into immortality elixir

1995, studying in Prague for a year. I went to Bucharest by myself, fully intending to shell out for a hotel since there wasn’t a lot of backpacker-level tourist infrastructure yet. Showed up to the hotel to check in & the desk clerk took one look at me and said “You can’t stay here.”
I would like to hear about a time someone, a stranger even, was very kind to you without any prompting, ulterior motive, or strings attached.

THIS. Did you know sickle cell is curable, now? FULLY curable.

If you're feeling down or despairing about what FEELS like technology/advancement/science "standing still" or being fully malicious, I have great news: You're not paying attention to actual science. Just tech industry marketing.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright

I think a lot of people who don't often write (or who just don't care) understand how easy it is to spot "AI" text once you've been exposed to it. It's gotten to the point that I can look at a piece of "AI" writing and tell if it was written by ChatGPT or some other LLM. They have "house styles."

"repetitive and meaninglessly vague" are the absolute hallmarks of slop. They're the "too many fingers" of text.

If it reads like a 7th grader trying to stretch their 100-word idea into a 300-word paper, it's almost certainly slop.

Do I have this right?

A Wall Street financier is shaping opinions for a newspaper owned by hedge funds to manufacture consent for technology built on intellectual theft to consolidate wealth and power into the hands of narcissistic billionaires while pouring gasoline on a climate crisis? 🤔
