“When we normalize the humiliation of the powerless, something in us breaks. When suffering becomes bureaucratic routine, our moral imagination shrinks…democracy itself is imperiled—because a society willing to deny the humanity of some will eventually rationalize denying the rights of many.”
People treating human beings like Amazon packages is why we need a new moral awakening, as @raushenbush.bsky.social and I expanded upon @thebulwark.com www.thebulwark.com/p/we-need-a-...

I want to ask the flipside question: what will it take for wealthy progressives to fund the infrastructure and entities needed to identify, support, and sustain emerging voices on *our* side of the aisle?
Anti-trans demagogue and fifth place swimmer Riley Gaines earned $470,000+ last year from a conservative non-profit.

Notably, $420k was incentive-based.

A neat little window into the way the transphobic grift is being compensated.

I wonder what the per-post rate is?

Tragic news. I’ve never met anyone who knew more about every candidate, in every district, every cycle than Howie. A passionate advocate for progressive politics & shaking up the establishment as anyone. And a true mensch. Rest in power, Howie.
Heartbroken to hear about the passing of amazing Howie Klein - founder of the progressive blog @downwithtyranny.bsky.social.

He was a brilliant blogger (from OG netroots) who made his mark as a big time music exec. Most importantly he was a kind human & a good friend. Rest in power Howie.

I think PGMOL refs should be required to sprint at full pace and have someone lightly push them from behind while doing so. It might give them needed knowledge to actually officiate professional athletes

bari weiss saw this and decided that she had to hide it from the american public
Guards began beating him. Beat him until he bled. Knocked his face into the wall, broke all his teeth. No access to outdoors, no contact with relatives.

America desperately needs opposition politicians running on a platform of tribunals, truth & reconciliation committees, and severe punishment for the worst offenders in this administration.

watching the CECOT 60 Minutes segment that CBS suppressed, it’s striking that Weiss specifically called out as unnecessary some of the most rigorous investigative work in the segment, including an explanation of how it was done (by human rights researchers)

I think that's right but you also have to address ideology, or risk a missing major driver here
The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

CBS paid the president of the United States millions in bribe money and now they censor news reports so it does not annoy him. I don’t know how much plainer we can put this.

This paraphrase of 60 Minutes journalist Sharyn Alfonsi in Playbook is really the thing: “declining to air a story because the administration wouldn’t comment for it amounted to handing the state a veto on journalism”

Oh no
I was just at the gym watching a The Wire s2 episode, and came back to this awful news. Ransone was incredible in that season — so believable as the screw-up determined to live down to everyone's low opinion of him. And great in almost everything else I saw him do. RIP.
