Think federal government housing aid is focused on low-income families & largely funded by the Department of Housing & Urban Development?

Think again.

In new work @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, we provide a comprehensive account of the US government's many housing supports, which go far beyond HUD 🏘️
How Does the Federal Government Support Housing?
The federal government supports the US housing market through dozens of initiatives administered by several agencies—in total, spending hundreds of billions …

There's broad agreement that transit-oriented development—TOD—is good. But the financing isn't always in place to make it feasible.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, we investigate factors that make TOD financially feasible, and point to opportunities for states to move the needle.

New paper on rezoning in NYC finds that upzoning is associated with:
—Greater housing supply: ~+4%
—More moves by incumbent residents out of upzoned areas, though not displaced to lower-income areas
—More moves in by residents from slightly higher-income areas

Montpellier FR began service on Tram 5 this past weekend. The 17.5 km line includes 11 km of new infrastructure as well as the creation of two major squares; the project cost €440 million, so roughly €65 m/mile. It's expected to serve 80,000 daily riders.

In New York City, one of the arguments frequently made by the MTA against platform screen doors is that they would be difficult to implement because different trains running on the same line have doors located in different places.

Meanwhile, at Shenzhen's high-speed rail station:
Today Futian HSR Station in Shenzhen just installed a dual layer PSD system. Similar to the one I visited in Osaka, Japan; two layers of PSD units can shift around to match the door positions of any train. China has over 50 different HST models with a bunch of different door locations...

Not just a petering out during the Biden years, but a concerted effort by moderate US senators, largely uncontested by senators to their left, to substitute the ambitions of the GND with a combination of the status-quo affirming IIJA/BIL & the tax credit focus of IRA.
The closest thing the left had to an answer to the question of what the future should look like (including aesthetically though with mixed results) was the green new deal. the petering out of that movement’s popular momentum in the Biden years has left a void that has yet to be filled

An important factor at play in the free-fares vs. reduced-fares-for-low-income-people debate: A means-tested program will inevitably result in a large share of eligible people not using it.

The documentation required for NYC fair fares is a hurdle for some people, notably undocumented people.

Outside US, auto industry is transitioning rapidly toward electric vehicles. EV market share is now >50% in China. & China now has by far the highest positive trade balance for auto exports.

Meanwhile, US car industry & its Trump admin supporters bury their heads in the sand as US EV sales decline.
China has achieved first-mover advantage in autonomous, connected, electric (ACE) vehicles. The US response has been tariffs and market isolation. A new CFR paper by @profdavidhart.bsky.social argues this is a trap—we need to compete, not retreat. 1/

I realize folks don't want to hear this, but we really need to re-examine the conventional wisdom that we can shift the entire US market to pure EV with massive batteries and some light consumer incentives.

It's a nice thing to believe but the evidence doesn't add up.

This is an argument I have made for a while - if you want to allow more new housing development, you'll face a lot less opposition if you protect existing tenants with rent regulation. Nice to have some more evidence to back that up.
Um, ok...

This paper forthcoming at the JOP provides evidence that rent control in Germany actually made tenants MASSIVELY *less* NIMBY.

This result was in the opposite direction of the authors' pre-registered expectations.

And the effect sizes are, truly, massive.
