We describe the very important equity project of the Red Line Extension that will bring important benefits to the majority Black South Side but explain that future time benefits do not fully repair harms from decades of waiting. We draw from 132 interviews on the far South Side of Chicago.

✍️ @kateontransport.bsky.social, @ansonstewart.com & G. Purifoye examine people’s experiences of #transit in #Chicago, including waiting and transfers, and how they connect to other parts of their lives.

Ald. Ramirez is a progressive, more CTU- and Brandon-friendly than her detractors. Urban Center has done mass texts and sent press releases to TV stations in support of the anti-Archer project / anti-Ramirez rallies. So this isn't about blue collar vs. elites. It's centrists vs. progressives. (9/X)

NEW: The “centrist” Abundance think tank pushing Democrats toward deregulation is run by a registered corporate lobbyist for OpenAI, Larry Ellison’s Oracle, and a crypto think tank.

Congratulations to UPPSA for organizing an amazing firm crawl! Grateful to be @uiccuppa.bsky.social faculty and work with these amazing leaders.

The underfunding of social infrastructure has also led the philanthropic/nonprofit sector in the US to grow to fill in the gaps. And while supporting that sector might seem like a way for privileged people to do good with their money, it gives privileged people huge power over that sector, as well.

Thanks for posting. It's a reality check (amid the other academics in the file release) for academia.

I think I may feel similarly?... I am troubled but can imagine wise folks suggesting this is not surprising?

Wow. When the apology might be even more problematic than the original (problematic) comment.

Satisfying read...I'm tired of the conventional wisdom that the left needs to moderate to win as the right shifts further into fascism. This piece explains that centrism no longer means winning (and can feel like pandering).
This @bostonreview.bsky.social piece by @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social is an absolute must-read, as are many of the responses to it.

Spread this one far and wide.

Moderation used to help Democrats win, but its advantages now have been greatly exaggerated.

We didn't say body cams on ICE. Their murders are already on video. We said no more ICE.
hindsight is 20/20 but maybe selecting university presidents on their willingness to debase themselves for private donor money is related to the current difficulties in defending academia from fascism
The arrests of Don Lemon, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lundy are unacceptable and a clear violation of the Constitution.

This is a dangerous abuse of power that threatens the rights of every single American.

They must be released immediately.

DEA?!? Gotta be a “task force.”
In 2021 I was telling people in my field of art history to stop legitimizing the use of image recognition, to stop applying for grants to use AI in identifying the subjects of portraiture bc this was what such work was being used to further. We should not be detaining people! Of course, risking their deaths by denying care make the situation more extreme but we are pouring money into an unjust system (while many make $ off of it). Minor reforms are insufficient.
Oversight of immigration detention, especially medical care, urgently needs reform.

When human beings are in the government’s custody, we are responsible for them.

Meta Is Blocking Users From Sharing Website Listing ICE Agents
Users of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads can no longer share links to ICE List, a website listing what it claims are the names of thousands of DHS employees.

The officer who shot Alex worked for DHS for 8 years. The officer who shot Renee worked for DHS for over 10 years. Both are considered “highly trained.”

The problem isn’t "training." DHS was built to violate our rights and has been empowered to act with impunity. We must MELT ICE and dismantle DHS.

Not one more cent for DHS and ICE. We have the power to end this.
