If You can remember it Sheep, the world is vast and empty. when i was a boy i used to stay awake at night listening to what was happening in our house—one room where we all sleptand ate, lit at nightby candles. ifyou looked ata flame from a candle straight on, unblinking, it danced in rhythm with the voice of whoever was speaking. once in a long while a traveler passed through and i peeked at him shyly as we ate. kept my eyes open that night, rolled up in my rug against one of my brothers, to hear what he had to tell my parents about himself. and i can remember a man who sold grain speaking with my parents one night, passing through on his way somewhere. he had grown up in the desert too, but far from us. crouched and quiet this night, he said, when i was small i thought that my family and the nearest neighboring family were the only people on earth, that no one else existed' so vast, is the desert. our nearest neighbors, cousins of my father, were an hour's walk over brittle earth: the nearest city, Errachidia, a day away.

The paper was old and faded. It had been folded so many times that the words were starting to disappear under the wrinkles, just like her face, and who she had been. She had read it countless times. By now she had memorized the letter's entirety, but it still carried all its weight. That was the most important part; the vulnerability had to be present, had to be real. She might be Madam Backlund to the thrill-seekers waiting outside, but in here, in this moment and late at night, all by herself, she was a lonely widow named Phoebe, and she lived in a haunted house.

The door downstairs flung open, and she heard the nervous chatter and the piling-in of feet. Slowly inhaling, she listened for them to settle down, read the notice on the pedestal in the foyer, and sign the registry. She folded the letter carefully and slid it back into the enve-lope. Straightening her blouse in the bureau mirror, she placed the paper under the empty ringboard of her jewelry box. Without a sound, she stepped into the hall and stopped at the top of the stairs outside her bedroom door.

Of the six people gathered below, four were men, and one of them noticed her first. Her silver hair was pulled tight in a bun…

Do others struggle with guilt & inadequacy because of disability? Like I can't go that hard, I can't do that thing, what's that say about my worth. I know all that is nonsense internalized ableism but I can't be the only one who deals with it.
