Denial is a troublesome problem. Fascism isn't really a surprise; it's helped shape what US society is today. For @prismreports.org, I wrote about how refusing to accept the reality of how we got here aids fascist growth. We have to confront many contradictions.

Fascism doesn’t just thrive on hate—it also feeds on denial. As institutions crumble and history is rewritten, the refusal to confront reality becomes one of the most dangerous political acts of all

Some people thought that genocide should be a red line for a party's politics. If both parties think that it isn't, why is anything else not on the table? Why wouldn't they collude on anything else horrible?
Calling the Democrats “cowards” suggests that they're scared to do what's right when they show no fervent interest in being an opposition. They're largely colluders, not cowards. Many want their base to think they're cowards to maintain investment in the idea that they can be pushed to do better.

How many times does the same thing have to happen before reality sinks in?

Anyone waiting on the Democrats to be an opposition shouldn't expect much. Don't be surprised if or when the Democrats (starting with the high-level establishment) start joining the Republicans outright and pushing this society toward a more openly one-party state.

No one has to do the Democrats' job for them and tell them about the tools at their disposal. Do you think the Republicans are the only ones who know how the system works? 'If they wanted to, they would' applies to US party politics too. They've been like this and only gotten worse for years.

"Some socialists wanted to work through government, political parties, and the state to seize power. Other socialists saw this as a corruptible reformist effort. Instead, they argued for building socialism from below through direct action, federations, and expropriation of the means of production."
Debates about anarchism versus socialism reveal that many people are unaware of the history of the socialist movement. At Offshoot, we made a zine explaining how this nonsensical binary shows a need for more political education on these terms people misrepresent. offshootjournal.org/anarchism-or...

A quintessential example of liberalism in today’s USA is people responding to Trump’s third-term talk with the idea of Obama running again. Instead of working to stop something unimaginably bad at all costs, there are those who already imagine extending it to everyone's detriment.

Absolutely no one should be contributing. This is the bare minimum.
Over 300 writers, scholars, and public intellectuals have pledged to not contribute to the New York Times’ Opinion section until it takes “accountability for its biased coverage and commits to truthfully and ethically reporting on the U.S.-Israeli war on Gaza.”

From Preston's ‘Aliens and Dissenters’:

“The Department of Commerce and Labor and the local inspectors operated almost without check and largely without public notice...The aliens rounded up had failed to make the protests that might have advertised the procedure and forced its reconsideration.”

A liberal relationship with history creates a false romance with a happy ending that doesn’t exist. Fascism feeds on denial, argues @williamcson.bsky.social in his “Another way out” column. We must reject any response to fascism that falls short of calls for unrestrained resistance.
