I talked with my friend @shaneburley.bsky.social about Nick Fuentes' recent rant about putting women in gulags. How seriously should we take Fuentes, culturally and politically? And what does rhetoric like this reveal about the broader trajectory of the movement he’s trying to shape? We get into it.

Here's Harriet Jacobs writing in her memoir about NYC: “What a disgrace to a city calling itself free, that inhabitants, guiltless of offense, and seeking to perform their duties conscientiously, should be condemned to live in such incessant fear, and have nowhere to turn for protection.”

And NYC was so unsafe for Black people that the population dropped significantly from the 1830s through the Civil War.

definitely seems like you're safer from any kind of punishment for being in the Epstein Files than for, say, just to pick two examples totally at random, attending a college protest for Gaza or tweeting that you weren't very sad Charlie Kirk died
Has anyone in the Epstein Files who didn’t do anything wrong been punished? Maybe someone who was at a meeting Epstein was at. Never went to the island, didn’t get money from him, nor had a bunch of friendly emails.

Anyone get arrested, fired, etc.? Because moral panics feature that sort of thing.
Noah Rothman on the Epstein files: "It is a witch hunt. It‘s a moral panic."

I just finished the last of the Levain cookies that I asked my partner to get me instead of chocolates for Valentine's Day this year. Those cookies are the absolute best thing. I may get them instead of a birthday cake next year.

Kudos to the Metro Louisville teens who organized and led an anti-ICE protest this afternoon on the Big Four Bridge!

Wonderful piece by @mskellymhayes.bsky.social about the right's vision of a life without women.

If I were a Democrat concerned about winning elections and was hearing that a significant number of voters wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in 2028, I would simply stop pushing Gavin Newsom in 2026.
look if you want to freak out about people not voting newsom if he's the nominee a week before the 2028 general election, I kinda get it (but don't say you weren't warned). doing it now though is just a weird attempt to strong arm people into supporting him in the primary.
I think most (not all) of the "I will never vote for Gavin Newsom" people are communists who are mad that Americans don't like communism and want to destroy the Democratic party out of revenge. They don't care how many elections Republicans win or how many trans people die as long as the Dems fall.

I did a 1 year long independent study about Japanese mass incarceration a few years ago and I was surprised to learn this. Blogged a bit about the use of "concentration camps" here: www.usprisonculture.com/2013/09/26/s...

You don't have to debate whether current concentration camps are actually concentration camps when the U.S. government called its own previous concentration camps, concentration camps...

Legal attempts to claw back at abuses are important. They do slow things down, help some people, force a formal record.

It will never ever be enough. Individual humans cannot litigate out from under an $85 bil avalanche.

We all know this but gently cultivate our judicial branch fantasies anyway

I recently interviewed some folks who weren't giving their real names, for safety reasons. When I asked what pronouns I should use, they said that I should use "only the best pronouns" to describe them 😂

I may steal that.

“By removing writing from reporters’ workloads, we’ve effectively freed up an extra workday for them each week.”

A newspaper editor actually said this! @theonion.com is cooked.
A conscientious journalism grad withdraw from a job when she learned the Cleveland Plain Dealer uses AI to write its stories.

Now the editor is castigating her and journalism professors for not being “prepared for the workforce.”

You can’t make this shit up.

The SAVE Act is bad. While lots of people are talking about the ID portion, It creates a criminal cause of action to put election workers in prison for (even accidentally) registering someone to vote without ID.
