Heritage is to Fuentes what the White Citizens Councils were to the Klan. White supremacists fellow travelers who agree on goals but differ on strategy and tactics.
Political coalitions definitionally band together despite disagreements. Differences of opinion, strategy, and ideology often flare into open conflicts. But what ultimately holds a coalition together are areas of agreement. During the civil rights movement, White Citizens’ Councils and the Ku Klux Klan were both part of a broad white supremacist movement dedicated to ensuring “segregation forever.” Klan members—willing to protect white dominance at any cost—saw firebombing churches and murdering children as viable strategies. White Citizen’s Councils, in contrast, were often peopled by middle class doctors, lawyers, and business owners who saw violence as low-class and potentially harmful for business. Images of dead little girls and bombed-out churches might backfire, rallying squishy liberals to civil rights causes and undermining the councils’ and Klan’s shared goals. But Jim Crow segregation was premised on violence, and every prosecutor’s refusal to charge or Klan acquittal from all-white juries was an acknowledgment of the brutality at the heart of Southern society. Despite protestations on both sides, the Councils and the Klan were ultimately brothers in hate.

I was reading about Fannie Lou Hamer's Freedom Farm Cooperative (FFC) in the book "Freedom Farmers." It talked about starvation as a political weapon and how the FFC was a project to build self sufficiency, feed people, and gain political power. Made me think a lot about the SNAP cuts rn.
trying to register, now they say, “go ahead and register—then you’ll starve.”25 Hamer’s organic intellectualism—her experience of the condition of starvation as a political weapon—enabled her to identify this structural obstacle to collective progress for the African American citizenry. She understood that the exploitative economic relationships between landowner and farm worker and between homeowner as employer and domestic worker were a major impediment to the movement for the vote. In her work with SNCC and with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, she connected the starvation of people in Sunflower County not only to the pressure to migrate but also to the pressure not to register to vote: “Nobody told us we have to move from Mississippi. Nobody tells us we’re not wanted. But when you’re starving you know.”26 In creating Freedom Farm as a means to develop a sustainable black community on the foundation of agriculture, Hamer illuminated the relationship between economic self-sufficiency and political power and translated the theory into action.

The federal government is starving the public but plans to buy warehouses for mega detention centers.

The plan is for detention centers to be run and staffed by the government. We can’t limit our critiques of the prison industrial complex to privatization!
