Looking for a pen? Shoppers overwhelm Chicago stationery shops as social media touts 'return to analog'
Stores like Paper & Pencil — packed with stickers, fountain pens and planners — have seen sales surge, but it's not because consumers are looking to get organized in the New Year.

New — I wrote about ChongLy Scott Thao, the elderly Hmong American wrongly arrested and forced out of his home by ICE in his underwear during the punishing Minnesota winter, what witnesses saw, and DHS's racist claim that he fit the description of another Asian man they were looking for.

My story:
Behind the disturbing image of ICE snatching a half-naked, elderly Hmong American from his home
DHS has claimed without evidence that they were looking for someone else when they took ChongLy Scott Thao.

My psychiatrist just had a Rupert Giles moment. She said, "It's going to be a better year. Because it has to be." She had a slightly sad smile. I'm not sure I'm the one she was trying to reassure. Anyway, the Buffy dialogue parallel hit me right in the gut.

Here in Minnesota we are under siege by federal forces. We urge everyone to take action with us on Friday, January 23rd!

No work. No school. No shopping. Strike ICE out of Minnesota!

Today is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He was murdered in Memphis during the 1968 sanitation workers strike, while supporting people who had been met with mace and tear gas from local police. He was a democratic socialist who believed in the power of organized labor.

People who have criminal records ALSO deserve dignity. OK.

You are not imagining it!!! Agents have been more aggressive and more emboldened, quicker to fly into a rage. And the community being more organized/prepared to confront them bc they've seen this play out in other cities = feds know they have even less time to execute a kidnapping
considering unraveled is based out of chicago & were on the ground covering things during the chicago ICE raids, that's been their observation as well. which is validating to people here in a sense because shit always feels more intense while it's happening & no, we're not imagining this up here.

You could palpably feel the excitement in Chicago for the bears in the playoffs. I rode the bus yesterday and had never seen so many people in bears gear. It was a tough last year for the city and it felt cool to see some kind of collective happiness again.

A brutal loss for our band of resilient overachievers but the city needed the joy you brought all year with astonishing comebacks and heart. Thank you for a wonderful season, Bears!

Twitter translation quality has decreased substantially. This is a tweet from the director of the Brazilian film The Secret Agent and next to it is the translation by Grok which references a completely different movie. Translation not a useful function anymore much like much of the site.

Local sheriff dept. puts up yellow tape to keep protesters from entering the street. So far, from what I’ve witnessed, no one today has tried to block the street.

Not to continue the discourse 😆 but today it’s 18 degrees, feels like -2 on my app. And I haven’t felt this bone chilling cold in a while. I walked half a block to the bus stop and that wind blast was pain. Walking more in this cold would have been hard.
Commenting from purely a bus rider POV, it seems very hard to persuade people that removing bus stops is good. I'd be upset to lose my closest bus stop. I know the visceral reaction as a rider is not the same as knowing the data. Persuasion is not as simple as telling ppl "see the data it's good."
I think Chicago urbanists should stop arguing for less bus stops as a solution to bus speed issues, it is dumb and ableist.
