He acknowledges there’s not much a Democrat in a Republican-controlled Senate can do to shield the Chicago area from Trump’s immigration crackdown, but the city, in many ways, is still home and he wanted to be here.

Teachers like Kat are noticing students on high alert and withdrawing in class. Some have also seen a dip in student attendance as federal immigration agents have carried out military raids citywide. Many students skip school, while others who used to be accompanied by a parent now walk to school on their own.

It was a war against Chicagoans during the blitz.
Altogether, reporters gathered and reviewed 49 uses of tear gas and other chemical weapons since the start of October. Of these, two-thirds appear to have targeted peaceful demonstrators or bystanders. Eight clearly show objects being thrown toward federal agents immediately before they respond with tear gas; the remaining cases are inconclusive

Just complete disregard for residents of Brighton Park and the SW Side.
All told, videos and photos from the Brighton Park protest show agents deploying tear gas and pepper balls at least 15 times. Ten of the Brighton Park chemical weapon deployments appeared to target nonviolent protesters. Only three deployments occurred after objects were thrown toward agents. All three appeared to happen after agents had previously used chemical weapons against protesters.

Two pro-ICE/ pro-MAGA / pro-Confederacy tourists showed up to the broadview ICE detention facility while I was there filming, not to protest, but instead to take celebratory photos at this place that is home to so much pain and anguish. A 74 Year old lifelong Chicago resident named John Platt who has been protesting here for the past two months was not having it. He got emotional when I asked him why he's out here taking this stand. Thank you to John for sharing your perspective.

This will be great for their events. They do so much in their small space.
And, DRUMROLL PLEASE…. …A DEDICATED EVENT SPACE! We’re so excited to be able to not only host bigger, more comfortable book events, teach-ins, art builds, and dance parties, but also be able to open it up both during and outside of store hours as a meeting space for community members and organizations to use, free of charge. We know that free, accessible spaces for community organizing are hard to come by, and we look forward to offering the space as a resource for our friends and comrades.

I get the Pilsen Community Books e-newsletter and they announced they’re moving, luckily to another part of Pilsen.

But the landlord in their current location on 18th and Carpenter raised their rent by 50%! Not sustainable for small businesses. Happy they are staying alive and expanding elsewhere.
That’s right! The landlord of our current space raised the rent by 50%, so we’re moving to a new space just 4 blocks down the street. As the store has been in its current space for 10 years and been operating as a worker-cooperative for almost 6 years, we’re sad to leave this space, but there are a few big things we’re pumped about in the new space, including: ADA compliant bathroom Closer to the pink line and Ashland Ave Slightly more space for the store Basement/storage space that doesn’t flood Ceiling that doesn’t leak

People held there experienced horrible conditions.
Attorneys for the detainees are seeking detailed data about the numbers of detainees processed and held at the facility over time, but during a daylong hearing earlier this month, detainees recounted times during which more than 150 people crammed into a holding cell.

Great interview. Last few months have seen the importance of journalism and journalists more than ever, especially ones rooted in community.
LRP: I do think readers trust us, maybe more than ever. They see that we’re on the ground, that we’re not chasing clickbait or repeating official statements. They see us standing in the cold outside a detention center, talking to families who are scared and waiting for answers. What drives me is knowing that, for many of these families, our reporting is the only record of what’s happening to them. Journalism, for me, is a form of witness — and when power goes unchecked, we have a duty to document that.
