If you're on the west coast, this is your reminder that the AFCON third place game is Satuday at 8a. This is also your regular reminder that Third Place Games absolutely bang in international soccer tournaments.

@clintonyates.bsky.social did not have to go this hard but he did- for the culture. This piece is worthy of highest awards- contextual sports writing at its finest but equal belongs in Foreign Affairs journal.

This is a phenomenal piece of writing; it deftly weaves the tournament, the history of Lumumba and Africa as a whole, and the man responsible for honoring him together into something truly remarkable.

In 2003 I was covering preps and told my new newsroom colleagues I should get an apparel deal because I’m at all these high profile games in front of a target demo.

They gasped.

I knew what was up. Still mad about it.
the other overlooked and apparently unideated concept here is that maybe just maybe a journalist or two deserves some NIL money in college too. Let student journalism be great again

Excuse me, the University of Kansas is right there. There are probably some college students making money on social media talking about sports, which is technically NIL (but not from the NIL funds), but “creators” an “journalists” aren’t exactly the same thing.

Student papers are, quite honestly, the outlets I see most consistently at all games, home/road/neutral.

Michigan Daily had WBB beat writers in Charlotte all 3 years of Jumpman. Duke had WBB writers in Vegas this year for Players Era. Those are just two of many examples off top of my head.

also, if you're wondering, Mali continues to crush this tournament uniwise. Incredibly regal look.

alright. I'll try this over here. Bored in an airport. Ask me anything. But, in honor of AFCON, it must be about Africa in some form. #AMA

the best action to take about this is to subscribe to papers that cover women’s sports so that they keep sending women’s sports writers to cover stories
