On #immigration, true #cosmopolitans should argue that states violating people’s right to #free movement should either be sentenced, or owe compensations to the people harmed, or that States deserve #amnesty
Why has nobody ever considered these positions?

Imagine a country where hundreds of thousands of legal permanent residents find stripped of their status and forced to reapply for their right to remain. Many no longer meet the criteria, plunged into illegality, subject to deportation.

I strongly opposed framing #women 's migration as #CareDrain & loss to children left behind because

1️⃣it relies on sexist #stereotypes
2️⃣devalues #care work
3️⃣prevents us from understanding #skills in #migration

But metaphors are stronger than arguments 🏋️‍♀️

... as a safeguard for the ordre public and/or welfare state. With this in mind, it seems justifiable not to have fully open borders right now.

But from a cosmopolitan normative point of view, it is clearly not the opening of borders that requires specific justification, but keeping them closed. ⬇️

I've argued in a little blog post (in German) back in 2013 that, in the long run, there is no good argument to have free movement at a national or European, but not at a global level.

But even some national constitutions connect free movement to certain conditions ... ⬇️

I heard that Habermas refused to associated his name. I don't know if it is for the same reason.
I'll look deeper into the article's details.

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

“If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Even so, it is difficult to answer the question "Do you think there are more recent immigrants staying in the UK illegally than legally?" with "more illegally".
Wondering why so many people answered like this...

Almost half of Britons (47%) think there are more migrants staying in the UK illegally than legally

Estimates of illegal migrants range from 120,000 to 1.3 million, with Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf putting the figure at 1.2 million.
