Yes, agree, I think there are bunch of myths about the Russian Army that are either Soviet-era holdovers or only reflect the very early stage of the war with Ukraine --- role of officers being one of them.

Last question! How well does your method work for units staffed by convicts?

Super interesting (and a ton of work!). Once you have the officer KIA, do you then calculate a fixed ratio of officer:conscript losses to generate estimates for total losses? And, if so, is about 5 or 6 soldiers to 1 officer?

I'd believe it. I've seen similar estimates that suggest a 1 million KIA + WIA + MIA was breached a few months ago.

What's the officer ratio method? Sounds interesting

Yes, and in the Northern Caucasus, too.

“Second, we want this case to help stop these killings from taking place again,” Mr. Kovalik said. “This is murder, and it is destroying rule of law.”

Great reviews in CHOICE, Perspectives on Politics, and International Affairs of our (new-ish) edited volume, Speaking Science to Power, on how academics can engage with policymakers in a responsible, ethical, way.

Glad this story is finally public but also incredible that it is taking media so long to dig up what is essentially open knowledge in these communities rn.

look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry
If you have a Dem senator and you're seeing this right now, CALL THEM RIGHT NOW and tell them NO. If you don't know anyone who would be affected by this, call them for my friend Lisa. She cannot afford insurance without ACA subsidies and without health insurance I'm terrified she will die.
Here’s video of federal agents doing a drive by pepper spraying that hit a father and his one-year old on Saturday when the Feds were hitting Little Village and Cicero
Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

DISCUSS SUICIDE WITH CHATGPT

EVERY *WEEK*

what the fuck are we DOING here
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.
