open appeal to Columbia U. admissions office: is there some way that a university instructor could send a letter of recommendation directly to Admissions without trying to navigate the maze of Common App?

the point of the ballroom obvs has nothing to do with aesthetics. it's to create an architectural structure to honor the patronage networks that currently dominate US politics. previous WH venues hosted maybe a couple of hundred people; this hosts nearly 1,000 rich donors.

You might like this sign my friend made.
This is the sign that moved me most today. The simple message. The homemade lettering. She seemed tired, but resolute.

Saw so many people from that generation today. People whose parents lived through WWII, who know what fascism looks like, and who may not be around to see us get out of this.
A nationwide backlash to AI data centers is brewing.

And for good reason: while AI enriches Big Tech CEOs and props up the stock market, data centers are sucking up communities’ water and power.

When the AI bubble bursts, the rest of us will be stuck holding the bag. Be warned.

In order for the United States to become a party to the International Criminal Court and have our officials be subject to trial at The Hague, the US Senate would need to ratify the Rome statute by a two-thirds vote. Let’s start running on that.

as "The Brutalist" echoed much of Paul Thomas Anderson's work, notably "The Master," so "One Battle at a Time" echoes with many startling influences & scarcely seemed recognizable as a film by Anderson. (did anyone else think this?)

Telling cartoon by @Stephff. Still, it is not as easy as it looks since #Cambodians are in specific sectors shunned by #Thai and #Myanmar migrants alike because of the very high risks like long haul fishing.... all this for what? Militarist nationalism...
Pay attention to the language that will be used by much of the media.

The Global Sumud Flotilla never entered Israeli waters.

They are in international waters attempting to reach Palestinian waters.

BREAKING: The Cambodian Defense Ministry posted on Facebook that at 11:52, the Thai military began firing at a Cambodian military position in the Anseh area, using mortars and firearms. Cambodian forces exercised high restraint and did not return fire. As of now, the Thai side continues its attack.
Only an administration intent on committing war crimes in the present and future would stoop to calling Wounded Knee a "battle" rather than what it truly was: a massacre of over 250 Lakotas, mainly women, children, and the elderly. 1/

If republicans think it’s crucial to keep the government open, they can keep it open without a single democrat. They can change the filibuster rules with a simple majority in the senate. It’s all up to them.
Sickening behavior by this agent. The fact that Mayor Adams has rolled out the red carpet for ICE is a stain on our city.
I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)
This is it, essentially. The core of it. The goal of ICE detention in the mass deportation system is to make people give up their case without fighting; to have an officer say “if you want to see a judge and plead your case, you’re going to be jailed for months and months, so why not give up now?”
Advocates say the Trump administration’s goal is clear: make the pre-deportation process so punitive that targets give up and leave voluntarily. The administration and its allies see the detention policy as a corrective to decades of catch-and-release policies www.politico.com/news/2025/09...
Trump’s new detention policy targets millions of immigrants. Judges keep saying it’s illegal.
The administration says the sweeping detentions are a key prong of Trump’s deportation strategy.
