Today's migration figures show that most people arriving on small boats are fleeing crisis & conflict in places like Sudan, Eritrea & Afghanistan.

Deterrence policies won't end people's need for safety. The government should focus on expanding safe routes & helping refugees to rebuild their lives.

Northern regions of Somalia are now facing their third consecutive season of poor rains.

Without urgent humanitarian action, malnutrition rates are set to rise sharply, as dry conditions devastate livelihoods, dry up water sources and deplete pastures.

Control does not require cruelty. Common sense ways of managing migration can coexist with decency, dignity and compassion.

The measures announced by the government today will not fix the asylum system. They will simply exacerbate existing challenges.
