still haunted by the last several minutes of Frankenheimer's "Seconds".... so sad that Rock Hudson in his greatest role did not receive awards for it, & that "Seconds," ahead of its time (as we say), did poorly commercially. (but not surprising: this is a harrowing film.)

An advance copy at that, looks like.

fascinating meditation/intimate record of reconstructing a lost city while exploring contemporary London on foot: Hari Kunzru's "Another London: Excavating the Disenchanted City" (Harper's, Feb. 2026)
the novelist's reflections on old, lost London read as effortlessly as thoughtful conversation

also--George Segal?! rejecting this great American sculptor because you think his work of art communicates a "wrong" political idea--(though exactly what, informed people could argue)--is not something that Princeton would do.
(many works by Segal at Rutgers Zimmerli Museum.)
I’d guess it was because Kent State decided the image carried a lesson they didn’t want to teach. Power imbalance, what happened in the 1970s, etc. Princeton decided to keep it, frame it, argue with it. Same sculpture, different tolerances for ambiguity. Just a guess.

a work of art that is a powerful but puzzling signifier.
most people walk past it oblivious.
but if you study it, circling it, its meaning seems to shift.
without an art historian explaining it, the sculpture has lapsed into "curious old-timey sculpture between the chapel & Firestone Library."
I think Kent St has the right of it.This is not an era in which to commemorate, much less celebrate, one person having power over another.Unless it's presented as a cautionary tale.Which this isn't.What's needed are symbols of defiance & resistance. Not passive compliance, which Abraham-Isaac represents
January 18, 2026 at 4:30 PM
why did Kent State refuse this sculpture? admittedly it is somewhat startling (Biblical Abraham, Isaac) on a pastoral day in Princeton but it is a strong work of art.
Far worse, JCO (than Kent State), by its deliberate venality, direction from the WH, & much wider scope. They are actually out to kill opponents & to deport people of color. (Sculpture by George Segal, commissioned by Kent State, which refused it, & accepted by my alma mater Princeton University.)

almost no one even remembers those killed in & near Venezuela.
"flood the zone" with atrocities, outrages, illegal acts by federal officers daily, hourly.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., accused his "pro-life" Republican colleagues of not caring about the people killed in boat strikes near Venezuela who the Trump regime, without providing evidence, claims were trafficking fentanyl.

Bernie Sanders was right about everything.
generally, we knew it at the time.
but: Establishment politics intervened.
We hear a lot of talk about “freedom” from my Republican colleagues. And yet these same Republicans are working overtime to deny tens of millions of women the basic freedom to control their own bodies.

That is wrong, and it represents a fundamental betrayal of what freedom is about.

keeping out serious rivals to benefit American athletes? this will backfire since the Olympic medalists will have asterisks beside their names forever.
At this point I put nothing past an administration led by Donald Trump so I am briefly entertaining the possibility that this is deliberate, in order to ensure the US wins
