great syllabus! but I begin with the Declaration of Independence & move through classics like Washington Irving, Melville & Poe, to the present day with a focus on on short fiction.
When I was still a professor teaching philosophy of literature, for about 5 years, I designed the course around the American Dream. We read: Day of the Locust; Play it as it Lays; Fear and Loathing in LV; A Scanner Darkly; and Less Than Zero. It was the most popular version of the course.

What we’re being told is that a guy who is an adjudicated rapist, who was credibly accused of sexual assault by dozens of women, who paid hush money to a porn star, who cheated on all his wives, who is mentioned hundreds of times in the Epstein files, couldn’t possibly be a sexual predator.

Soon, he will discover the man o’war so excitedly named.
lol. No one has ever heard of battleships!
President Trump will announce on Monday a new type of large warship he is calling “battleships,” marking a step toward achieving the president’s vision for a new “Golden Fleet.”

What would the world have done without Bill & Hillary to demonize for decades? Acres of newsprint in the NY Times alone. All those tremulously spiteful columns by Maureen Dowd.
Pretty damn funny. I doubt Bill is clean in the files, so maybe he's just trying to make sure if he goes down the 🟠💩 and everyone else goes down with him. As they all should.
Nothing about this whole Epstein story is funny except maybe this. Trump spends months freaking out and his DOJ jumps through hoops to hide the evidence, meanwhile they kept trying to distract us by pointing at Clinton. Now Clinton demands a full release, and Trump looks ridiculous in comparison.

“Radical left”?—his polls are dropping into the low 30’s. This is crediting the “radical left” with a popularity they’ve never even fantasized.
If this doesn't motivate you to vote in the Midterms, nothing will.

So true! But maybe Schopenhauer had a deeper grasp of the world as will—blind instinct ruling humankind ; & only that will is strong enough to continue to propagate the species if there is conscious choice involved.
a loss of a deeply civilizational trait, but this isn't a decline. the material factors that produce it – gender equality, access to education, massive declines in childhood mortality – are things that should make us all proud.

This appears to be true. Just as a person “who has everything” may take their own life confounding everyone around them who have failed to perceive the deep clinical depression that is kept hidden from view or may in fact have been unconscious.
