After the previous coalition government had a minister for "development aid", the new Dutch government coalition will have a minister for "development cooperation" again :

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

👊 A slap from Will Smith attracts more attention than a war. Why the media should stop neglecting the Global South ⬇️

Oh that's amazing, German workplaces and student homes/WGs are indeed the same picture
A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world

Absolutely, what's the issue really
I don't fully understand why we are discussing the merger of Commission and EuCo president now. It was unbearable with Charles Michel, but that seems to have been an idiosyncratic issue. It works well with Costa. VDL is Europe's number to call. Costa keeps EuCo working. What problem are we solving?

"felt like chicken soup to me" is such a wonderful way to describe that, thank you! Frequently rewatched Hobbit 2 when I had the flu, it rhymes and was my very own chicken soup

sieht aus wie Ketchup! ;-) Lass es dir schmecken und viel Erfolg

Yeah, essentially his job to say the EU is dependent on the US

I am old enough to remember Putin saying as late as 18 February 2022 - less than a week before the invasion - that Russia had no intention to use military force against Ukraine.
Trump ruling out the use of military force does not defuse this crisis

Europe & Denmark's red lines are territorial integrity & the right of self-determination for the people of Greenland. They do not want to join the US

Trump has to give up his ambition for sovereign control
If I walk up to you with hammer and say “I could break your knees if you don’t give me $20 but I won’t,” would you feel relieved that I’d ruled out breaking your knees?

Trump says, he won't use force on Greenland

"We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength & force, we'd be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that.... that's probably the biggest statement I made, because people thought I would use force, but I don't have to"
In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies.

I have translated some of the highlights
The EU really knows how to hide its light under a bushel. It has just passed the world's biggest trade deal (with Mercosur) - using a written procedure among ambassadors, making the public barely notices a huge strategic step forward for Europe. Contrast with Trump's made-for-TV signing ceremonies.

One of the enduring effects of the UK's development policy on academic research is the amount of times I read "Overseas Development Assistance" rather than "Official Development Assistance"

The EU is the world's biggest single market and the largest exporter of services, manufactured goods and double standards
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

I feel like I haven’t even been properly lied to about the purposes of this war

Wow, am Montag sogar?!

Just reviewing a journal manuscript in this dark Sunday evening, and in keeping with that the review form asks me to tick a box to confirm that I did not cheat myself out of this voluntary anonymous task but actually read the thing. Sign of the times etc.
From the @wsj.com chief foreign correspondent

Makes sense, guess it reminds you of the energy you now no longer have to spend on those things

I remember Von der Leyen calling the European Green Deal "Europe's Man on the Moon moment" back in December 2019. I suppose in her second term she skipped straight to flat-earthing
Scathing view on the first year of vdL II: "Today the only tangible result [von der Leyen] consistently produces is the dismantling of what she built in her first term—above all the Green Deal, but also Europe’s economic and digital sovereignty."
