Thanks for posting this. Really important for any business continuity efforts. How many had a plan for this type of event? Is there any recovery beyond the 2500 from PG&E after losing so much?

Sure!!

I ask these because it could be both sides needing better coordination. And you point abt TX stands - the WFO was the most vocal in absence of local alerting. Whatever happened to IWTs? Are those still active with the reduction in force?

Great interview with the mayor. Questions emerge: was the city in touch with local WFO? Does the city have reputation for issuing timely messages to locals using CodeRed? Did the city have consistently updated socials? Was WFO on chat about plans to issue WEA? Does WFO have local geo knowledge?

This is not great. He’s now an expert in faith and spirituality?

Do you mean losing access to external research funding, preventing the use of specific words, required posting our syllabus online? I can see that.
The atomic ensemble time scale at the NIST Boulder campus has failed.

"Do you work; I WILL check your references. I will not remind you of this again. 3 of your peers failed the fall course. Don't be like them."
I'm tired - glad the semester is done.

"it wasn't my fault," one pleaded. "I can't afford to fail!" And I didn't want to fail them, any of them, and yet this is the final assignment and they clearly didn't give it the effort required. So, the semester comes to a close and next semester, I have advice for my spring class...

I looked in google scholar, I used Amazon books to search, I used our university databases. I spent HOURS looking for these citations to prove to myself that I was being fair to these poor students who were TRICKED into using these fake resources.

And the references? They looked like they could be real. The paper titles were just a little bit different from the real thing; the authors were real published researchers; the journals, well they sounded like they could be authentic but they certainly weren't. I used ulrichsweb & web of science

THREE students used AI to search for articles, resulting in fake references, fake summaries, fake everything. I checked every paper for references. If there was a DOI to an article, at the very least they interacted with published material. These three? No DOI, no real papers, all made up.

But... you must tell me how you use AI to complete the assignment. Grammar? References? Search? Outline? Ideas? Just tell me. And sign your name saying that the words on that paper are YOUR words. They signed, they submitted (most did). And some were good enough not to get caught. Some weren't

AI and my students' final papers: a story. The assignment was to select 10 peer reviewed articles, summarize them, discuss how they intersect, identify gaps in research and next steps. Any topic of interest related to the class. No more than 12 pages with clear instructions. I thought.

ICYMI: Atmospheric science spans from climate scale to microscale - just like the atmosphere itself - and the Trump Administration's plans to dismantle NCAR and somehow protect "vital weather research" shows a complete lack of understanding of how science works. tinyurl.com/3rtpafnx
Trump Administration announces plans to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research and close its famed Mesa Lab
Shortsighted plan would (in my view) cause irreparable harm to global atmospheric science research

Where do I get this Richardsonism tshirt to show my affiliation? I’ve never put a bumper sticker on my car… but since my cat died, maybe I can take off her magnet and replace it with a picture of HCR instead?

A Washington Post investigation found U.S. Forest Service trails are deteriorating due to staff cuts under the Trump administration. https://wapo.st/3YxlZC4
This is a terrible development.

The Administration is destroying the scientific institutions that helped make America great. It will take years to rebuild from this.

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

Did you know that from tomorrow, Qualtrics is offering synthetic panels (AI-generated participants)?

Follow me down a rabbit hole I'm calling "doing science is tough and I'm so busy, can't we just make up participants?"
Well, this is an utter disaster for science.

This gutting of peer review is very likely driven by Project 2025/OMB/Vought, very likely is about funding junk science, and very likely is coming for #NIH and biomedical research next.

Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things

Tweeting the scanner - like reporting what was heard on police scanners without verifying first? There are apps that are designed to do exactly that - putting the credibility of FBI behind it seems to be the difference?
Gen AI tools are not good sources for information during rapidly unfolding, novel events. Words associations aren't helpful for discovering ground truth. These tools are more likely to echo and contribute to the inherent uncertainty and ambiguity of crisis events.

Similar to what happened in the UVU shooting too when the FBI said the suspect was captured... not true and the campus EM had to walk that back.
From the Oklahoma U student paper: the school is now saying it will automatically suspend faculty (with pay) in response to student complaints

Those WEAs and updates coming out of Snohomish County Sheriff are a master class in plain language messaging. So good. Others include unnecessary jargon like SET status and Level 2. Seeing them side by side is eye opening.
