Just apropos of several things going on on this site, I don’t want to be see mean or judgy (this isn’t a value judgement, to be clear), but I really feel like a lot of people are functionally illiterate. This goes beyond reading comprehension issues.

Handwaving away your party’s embrace of antisemitic conspiracy theories by saying “at least we’re not controlled by George Soros” is the most ridiculously quiet-part-loud thing I’ve ever seen.

It's easy to dunk on liberals with something like 'why can't liberalism build anything as interesting as Soviet towers or Mussolini's monuments' but the more interesting question is the opposite, why does everyone with strong opinions on monumental architecture turn out to be politically insane.

Their very obvious claim is that it’s racist discrimination to *have a policy to address racial disparities* but it’s fine to have a system that simply creates massive racial disparities. The correction attempt is the outrage. Not the disparities. Because they are white supremacists.

thinking about how few people know about the false electors scheme is genuinely depressing

thinking about how nobody in the democratic party has signaled a willingness to reopen that question is also depressing

i'm just really depressed, i think
I also developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt of this, using the investigative methods of "reading the words that the president regularly spoke and wrote in public forums."
BREAKING on MS NOW:

Jack Smith, in his opening statement to House Judiciary, says:

"Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and to prevent the lawful transfer of power."

Hundreds of underage girls married off and hundreds more children kidnapped as U.S. foreign aid cuts contribute to surge in violations against persecuted Rohingya children.
Trafficked, exploited, married off: Rohingya children’s lives crushed by foreign aid cuts
Severe foreign aid cuts imposed this year by U.S. President Donald Trump, along with funding reductions from other countries, shuttered thousands of schools and youth training centers in camps for Rohingya in Bangladesh and crippled child protection programs.

Speaking ill of the dead is controversial, particularly when it was a violent death. It’s edgy; it’s sensitive; best avoided in most cases, etc.

Baselessly making another person’s murder *about yourself,* and then approving of it, is a different thing. That is delusional, narcissistic, sociopathic.

In hindsight what will be most glaring is how much of his influence over elected officials has been they're truly terrified he'll get them killed, and can on a moment's whim bombard them and their families w/ threats, swatting, etc. It's no excuse, but it's real and bigger than openly acknowledged.
Even among Republicans, "give Trump a blank check to stochastically kill anyone who annoys him on any given day" is remarkably unpopular.

Just ask senators in Indiana.
The sociopathic tone of glee and mockery is bad enough, but that's really not the worst of it. He made up a claim that a Trump supporter had done it, *in order to say that would be good and justified.* Unambiguously telling his most insane cult followers that murdering his opponents makes him happy.

authoritarian states -- the confederacy, north korea, and communist china -- tend to make harsh demands of outsiders to mimic their internal censorship. because they feel (probably with some justification) that one little domino falling sets off a cascade. US cultural conservatism is this too
Exactly. Coddling them is not helping them or anyone else, and makes things worse for others.

Hard times are war, depression, tyranny. Not "I saw on my smartphone that people I don't know are reading books at a library in another town at a voluntary family event that I didn't attend." FFS.
I can understand, even if I disagree, why French wants to try and empathize with the concerns of these RW culture war types. But that empathy is just reinforcing their whiny, spoiled attitude when what they need to be told is to grow the fuck up, those aren’t real problems.

We're going to have to jam civilization and science down some people's throats.

The baseline structure of the US constitution can survive many things. What it cannot survive is the speaker of the house being an omega male who is completely submissive to the president and willing to surrender all of his power. Mike Johnson is genuinely groundbreaking in this regard.

If Dems win cleanly in 2028 and power is transitioned peacefully, I don’t think there will be a lot of political will to go after high-level Trump officials.

But I suspect Hegseth et al will *perceive* a threat of prosecution and will attempt a coup. if that fails, they’re all getting prosecuted.
