apropos of this, fun story about VW rabbits. my uncle had one when he was in grad school in chicago. he was driving down lakeshore drive once when it stalled and died.

there was nothing wrong with the car. it was just so cold with the wind coming off the lake that the fuel was gelling in the carb.
My first car was a 1979 VW Rabbit. I loved that car. It broke down a lot thought.

the president is not popular. the civil society-based opposition is very real. the vibes and stories out there are not appreciably different than 2018; it’s the media environment that has decidedly shifted/balkanized.

I don't even want to text 'em. I just want to feel that support

DON’T. PRINT. LIES. IN. THE. NEWSPAPERS.

Every damn day. It’s exhausting.
NYT provides no evidence here, probably because the claim is flatly untrue. See eg recent Pew data, or many posts on the subject from @gelliottmorris.com this year

If this was your friend you'd be trying to talk them down from their obviously manic mental health episode.
President Donald Trump gifted the world with nearly 200 Truth Social posts (and counting) on Christmas Day, where he amplified conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and called for a member of Congress to be deported.

You can’t spend 40 years shouting "Information wants to be free!" and then get mad when a neural network takes you up on that offer.

A government that can officially declare that Jesus is your savior can just as easily declare the opposite.
Here’s the U.S. government being officially religious in a country with no official religion.

to elaborate on this a bit, landlords committing arson-based insurance fraud was a documented epidemic on both sides of the Hudson before and during this time period, before you even get into the murder rates
not to dismiss that there is also a stark racial angle to this, but there's a specific neurosis about urban life that comes from having been in the tristate in the 80s and 90s imo
