lovely little story
a random men reading story that isn't 'ooh, look at that man reading.' When I lived in South Korea I had a friend, Paul, who was an ex-army sergeant in his late thirties and had come from a pretty rough family background in rural Illinois. Very sweet guy, kind of a disordered life.

Here's the part that gets me on the shutdown: The section prohibiting Trump from firing workers is great! But it wasn't carried through to stop rescissions & withheld funds.
That Democrats knew how to write a No Kings budget, then only passed a tiny section of it to get Tim Kaine's vote, is galling.
The Most Frustrating Thing About the Shutdown Cave - The American Prospect
Senate Democrats actually know how to use their power to counter Donald Trump and ensure that legislative funding gets spent—but this continuing resolution makes it clear they chose not to.

It’s such a bad idea, when one of his crimes was calling forth an insurrection, that he’s actually forbidden from holding the office by a constitutional provision, which a unanimous Supreme Court invented a way to turn off.
To repeat: Maybe electing a life-long criminal to an office where he can pardon other criminals wasn't such a good idea.

We have some shutdown stuff coming, but I want to turn your attention to this great piece from Chris Hughes, who has really done the best analysis on what Trump economics is: not industrial policy or right populism or America First. It's rule by deal.

Just a heads up this isn't just about trans women. "Olympic chiefs are also looking at prohibiting athletes with DSD (differences of sex development) from women's events given testosterone advantages."

SCOOP: Schumer was more involved than reported with the attempted cave on the government shutdown. The Gang of 8 Senate Dems had his approval & he was getting daily updates.
In Thursday's caucus meeting, the Gang claimed they had 10 votes to cave. The caucus went nuts, leading to the new proposal.
