People always tell you "the time flies" when you have kids and that's BS. Time moves at exactly the same speed as always. You just don't get enough REM sleep to form long-term memories...
The Reminiscence Bump is interesting.

The older you get, the stronger your memories of late teens/early 20's become versus such as "last year" and "this morning's breakfast" and "my entire 30's"

These memories are often the last to recede under Alzheimers.

the idea of changing the law is so dead in america that the idea that something might be banned by statute rather than by arguing that it is already banned (in terms of water use, in terms of copyright) seems completely alien

I like how full text search of every book and human thought ever was a SOLVED PROBLEM in 2001, and now dicks at search engines and my own phone – a piece of silicon faster to respond than God was ever imagined in scripture – prevent it from working, _as a retroactive infantilizing design choice_.

This is the main problem with vulgar Marxist materialism tbh. You get too caught up in looking behind the curtain for the man in the top hat when it comes to like racism or nationalism. Sometimes things just are what they are.

There's a tendency among a certain type of poster to assume everything they hate about politics and the state can be blamed on avarice, and I'm here to tell you it's actually worse than that.
I continue to disagree with this. The goal of mass detention is mass deportations. A private prison company leasing 100 beds to ICE gets paid the same if the beds are filled by 100 people for a year each or 1,000 people for a few days each. They don't earn more with long-term detention.
It's not about deporting them. It's about detaining them indefinitely and enriching Prisons for Profiteers and the grift the Convict in the Oval Office collects per detainee.

Not the main point here (that’s the craven cowardice in the face of lawless authoritarianism & being totally wrong here), but it is worth mentioning, since everyone is going to rail at “The Democrats,” that Angus King left the Democratic Party…32 years ago & continues not to be a member of it.

at a basic level a huge amount of the actions of the federal govt amount to shitposting channeled through executive power. sounds like a snark. it’s not. it’s the language and impulse these people know. a mixed of bad humor and aggression driven by impulse.
NEW: The Trump admin told states it must immediately "undo" the work to provide full food stamp benefits, or face penalties. The feds sent this in a late-night memo, only adding to the chaos and confusion around SNAP. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/09/b...

I think that the disconnect here is that real household income is absolutely (indisputably!) up, but the price of the most essential household good, the fucking house, has dramatically increased beyond general inflation (due to both lack of supply as well as lifestyle inflation)
What drives me absolutely insane about this debate is how claims like “there has been a generational stagnation of purchasing power” have taken on the tenor of religious faith among progressives, and seemingly cannot be disproven with any evidence, no matter how overwhelming. It simply isn’t true!

'Maybe we'll cancel SNAP and 10-20% of all flights through *Thanksgiving* and *Christmas*' is just an insane political position.

You do that and the annual Turkey fryer injuries won't be from turkeys, but from folks attempting to fry whole GOP senators for Thanksgiving.
GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.

REPORTERS: 😳

KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

500 years ago it was impossible for wealth to exist independent of violence.

Now we have created a world so stable and productive that basically anything can be summoned from logistical ether in a day and paid for with electrons, and we are letting that paradise die rather than kill one guy.
