as previously discussed downthread from the patient zero discussion that ended with sky off of here, the amount of subsidy to make this profitable (and thus palatable to any US company) is hilariously large

think the fact that maduro had cuban guards says a lot about the limited commitment of venezuelan institutions to his continued rule

the parker malloy drama is imo, instructive here in how stupid the firing squad stuff is now
Yeah again, not telling you how to post but the number of people I see both enthusiastically celebrating “running off” someone and decrying people still being on X is not zero. You gotta choose guys!
I find it hard to square the preciousness about "why would someone ever stay on Twitter?" when everyone on this site knows that the community here intentionally chased off lots of people.

rough way for the Cubans to find out they weren’t in the real group chat

My educated guess is that they all were laid flat by well aimed small arms fire at a pace that would shock you.
Cuban intelligence has a reputation for being one of the most formidable in the Western Hem. Yet they were seemingly caught off guard by an elaborate and long-planned Maduro op, in spite of controlling Venezuela’s security. I have questions: open.substack.com/pub/macspaun...
The Dog That Didn't Bark in the Maduro Op
Cuban intelligence runs Venezuela's security apparatus. Where was it when the U.S. snatched the Venezuelan strongman?

Cute that he thinks a civil war will be against a clearly defined ideological enemy and not whatever local militia decides they need your car.
that's cool, man, but have you tried the taste of a refreshing matcha latte

I also had to explain to conservative friends that the administration had asked if there was interest in Venezuelan oil in the industry and the answer was no.

There’s a horseshoe going on here for sure.
genuinely saw a post saying that the idea of sour crude was a lie by the elite which is uh, baffling to me

A reminder that this entire to-do started because Sky pointed out - with their relevant professional experience - that Venezuelan oil is Not Great and offers really no advantage over Canadian Tar Sands oil, and therefore, to the extent that this war *is* about oil, it's a dumb reason to go to war

You can have democracy or you can have a military that fixes the mistakes of the electorate. You can’t have both.

The military doesn't parse legality unless it's plainly a thing you get charged for at the Hague (that second boat strike was a blatantly illegal order that shouldn't have been followed)

In the case of getting Maduro, do you think the current SCOTUS would rule it illegal?

If that answer is "No"

But to flip it back to the skeeterati insisting we should all refuse the orders they don't like... would they have approved of service-members refusing the order to get the COVID shot in 2021? Or the end of DADT in 2011?

As a point of contrast, if even SCOTUS, comprised of highly trained, experienced, and vetted legal experts, rarely reach total consensus on the legality of cases brought before them... do you really want the average military officer exercising a legal veto over the nation's elected leaders?

A problem is that if it's ok for Johnny Goodgeneral to overrule DOJ/POTUS on legality of orders, you also get Mike Flynn or Jerry Boykin rejecting orders on vaccines, allowing gay service, escorting kids in Little Rock, or saying Obama is Kenyan and not really President
January 4, 2026 at 1:53 PM
Again, how do you know what's an illegal order in the military?
IN THEORY, the US military loves Janowitz.

The men and women of our armed services, from top to bottom, are, as a matter of official policy, supposed to embody the citizen-soldier, and are *supposed to call bullshit on illegal orders*

this is basically ricks' argument in THE GENERALS: that the structure of the american military (and political leadership) has generated an enormously competent professional force... that consistently generates useless results because of a void of strategic thinking at the top
